Broncos drop 8-3 game in Saskatoon
The Swift Current Broncos (1-3-0-0) had a tough night in Saskatoon against the Blades (3-0-0-0) Saturday night, being outshot 43-27 and dropping an 8-3 game.
The Blades opened the scoring early as their top line cycled the puck deep in the Broncos zone. Connor Roulette found Josh Pillar in the slot and he fired a one timer over the blocker of Reid Dyck 4:12 into the game.
Broncos blanked by Winnipeg on home ice
The Swift Current Broncos (1-2-0-0) couldn’t seem to buy a goal Friday night, falling 5-0 to the Winnipeg ICE (3-0-0-0) at the InnovationPlex.
The first goal of the game didn’t come until late in the first period. After winning a faceoff in their own zone, the ICE fired the puck up the boards and out to centre to create a quick two-on-one rush. Connor McClennon slid the puck across to Zach Benson who beat Gage Alexander through the five hole with 5:22 left in the first.
Broncos come from behind to down Hitmen in shootout
The Swift Current Broncos (1-1-0-0) rallied from a 2-1 deficit after two periods to take down the Calgary Hitmen (1-0-0-1) 3-2 in a shootout Saturday night.
The game got off to a tough start for the Broncos as the Hitmen dumped the puck in from centre ice and went on the forecheck. Joey Rocha, making his WHL debut, came out of the net to play the puck behind the net, and was caught by two Calgary forecheckers.
The Hitmen were able to work the puck to the crease and Oliver Tulk tapped it into the open net, putting Calgary ahead 1-0 just 20 seconds after puck drop.
Broncos fall in season opener to Hitmen
The Swift Current Broncos (0-1-0-0) and Calgary Hitmen (1-0-0-0) combined for just 37 shots on net Friday night, and Maxim Muranov’s third-period goal stood up as the game winner as the Broncos fell 2-1 to open the 2022-23 season.
The Broncos found themselves behind early as they were called for two penalties 50 seconds apart just a few minutes after puck drop. Less then 30 seconds into the two-man advantage, Carson Wetsch fired a one timer past the blocker of Reid Dyck for his first WHL goal to put Calgary up 1-0.
Broncos blanked by Tigers in pre-season finale
The Swift Current Broncos fired 26 shots toward the Medicine Hat Tigers net Saturday night, but couldn’t solve Beckett Langkow in a 3-0 loss in their pre-season finale.
A scoreless first period had the Broncos behind 14-6 on the shot clock as the Tigers had a pair of power plays. Joey Rocha stood tall in net for Swift Current, keeping them on even terms through 20 minutes of play.
Broncos doubled up by Tigers in pre-season action
The Swift Current Broncos dropped a 6-3 game to the Medicine Hat Tigers at the InnovationPlex Friday night.
The Tigers jumped out to an early lead, scoring twice in the opening 3:08 to take a 2-0 lead. The first was Andrew Basha redirecting a pass from the blue line past the glove of Joey Rocha, and then Hunter St. Martin firing a one timer off the rush under the blocker of Rocha off the rush.
Broncos drop pre-season game to Pats in Estevan
The Swift Current Broncos jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one period of play Tuesday night, but the Regina Pats scored four unanswered as the Broncos fell 4-2 at Affinity Place in Estevan.
The game had a slow start as neither team was able to establish control in the opening 10 minutes. A strong forecheck lead to the opening goal of the game. Luke Mistelbacher held the Pats in their own zone and forced the puck down to the corner for Maddix McCagherty.
Broncos sign Gull Lake goalie
The Swift Current Broncos announced today they have signed 2007-born goaltender Berney Weston to a Standard Player Agreement. He was selected with the 74th overall pick in the 2022 WHL Prospects Draft.
“As an organization, from top to bottom, we are thrilled to sign Berney,” said Broncos general manager Chad Leslie. “He had an outstanding season last year and carried that over from rookie camp to main camp. To have another local player earn this opportunity means a lot to our group.”
Seven current Broncos heading to NHL rookie camps
Seven players on the active roster for the Swift Current Broncos are heading to NHL rookie camps this week.
Owen Pickering (Pittsburgh), Connor Hvidston (Anaheim), Josh Filmon (New Jersey), Reid Dyck (Boston), Josh Davies (Florida), Gage Alexander (Anaheim) and Sam McGinley (Carolina) left Monday afternoon to attend their respective camps. Recent Broncos alumni Isaac Poulter (New Jersey) and Cole Nagy (Colorado) are also attending camps.
Broncos ink third rounder from 2021 draft
The Swift Current Broncos announced today that they have signed 2006-born forward Dawson Gerwing to a Standard Player Agreement. He was drafted 48th overall in the 2021 WHL Prospects Draft.
Gerwing, from Meadow Lake, Sask., spent the 2021-22 season with the Battlefords Stars of the Saskatchewan U18 League, picking up 35 points (16-19-35) in 39 games. He then added a pair of goals in four playoff games.
