Province easing fire and travel restrictions

Manitoba Wildfire Service (MWS) is easing some fire and travel restrictions beginning Thursday morning.

According to our province, recent rainfall and a full green-up have helped reduce the fire risk in some parts of Manitoba. Other areas remain at high risk, with significant fire suppression operations continuing and restrictions still in place.

Effective Thursday at 8 am, areas 1 to 5 and areas 8 to 22 will be at Level 2 (area 1 includes everything from Provincial Road 302 to the Ontario border and south of the Trans Canada Highway). This means:

Expect gas prices to climb

Motorists in Steinbach should expect gas prices to climb in the coming days.

That is according to Patrick De Haan, Head of Petroleum Analysis at GasBuddy. De Haan made that comment in response to what has been happening in Winnipeg this week, where gas prices today average 132 cents per litre. Some stations last weekend were selling gas for as low as 111 cents per litre.

Though De Haan is not expecting gas prices to climb 20 cents per litre in Steinbach, he says if Winnipeg saw an increase, so too will The Automobile City.

Canadians spending less time with friends, especially those of working age: StatCan

A Statistics Canada reports says Canadians are spending less time with friends than ever, with the decline sharpest among the working-age demographic.

The data released Tuesday show that in 2022, only 19.3 per cent of Canadians saw friends on an average day, down from 47.9 per cent in 1986.

The questions to those in the survey asks if they were with a friend or family member in person, separate from communicating using technology such as phone, email, or social media.
