Temperature records shattered Sunday
Steinbach broke a temperature record on Sunday, and there is a chance the same thing happens Monday.
According to Environment Canada, the mercury peaked at 33.1 degrees Celsius, making it the hottest May 11th ever recorded. The previous record of 30.6 degrees was set in 1977.
Grunthal man charged in Portage with impaired driving, speeding
A Grunthal man is facing impaired driving and speeding charges after an RCMP traffic stop last month uncovered multiple alleged offences, including driving with a suspended licence and a blood alcohol level over the legal limit.
According to Mounties, an officer patrolling Highway 1 near Portage la Prairie on April 29, 2025, clocked a vehicle speeding shortly after 2:20 p.m.
During the stop, police discovered the 43-year-old Grunthal man’s licence had been suspended. Officers also reported signs of impairment and arrested him.

Margaret Rose Germain, 83, of St. Malo passed away Wednesday, May 7th at DeSalaberry District Health Centre. She is survived by 1 daughter, 2 sons, and their families. She was predeceased by her husband Ken.
Cremation has taken place.
Private family ash interment for Margaret Rose Germain will be held at a later date.

Pastor Jacob Jake Froese, 86, of Winnipeg passed away February 2nd at St. Boniface Hospital. He is survived by his wife Diane, 3 sons, and their families. He was predeceased by his first wife Lena.
The Going Home Service for Pastor Jacob Jake Froese will be held Sunday, May 18th at 3pm at Morrow Gospel Church, 755 Ste. Anne’s Road. Private family burial has already taken place.

Mistelbacher talks trade to Wheat Kings, AHL and more
It was an incredible season for Steinbach's Luke Mistelbacher, one that was very entertaining throughout but it was the last couple of weeks that saw things really pick up for the 19-year-old including an AHL deal, then a draft day trade that brings him a little closer to home.
"I was pretty excited, I'm a lot closer to home now," Mistelbacher said after being moved to the Brandon Wheat Kings from the Swift Current Broncos. "I'll get to see my family a lot more and I'm excited to be there. I'm pretty sure they're loading up a little bit, so it's going to be fun."
Eastman Raiders pitch $212,000 floodlight project to Steinbach city council
The Eastman Raiders Football Club is asking the City of Steinbach to help pay for floodlights at the football field at A.D. Penner Park. The club made a presentation to city council this week, requesting $71,000 to cover approximately one-third of the total project cost.
Community rallies behind Tasha Wiese with $20,000 collected in fundraiser
A fundraiser held at MJ’s Kafe in Steinbach raised $20,000 to support Tasha Wiese, a local daycare worker who lost both hands and her legs above the knees due to severe health complications. Wiese was hospitalized on March 10 with severe pneumonia, invasive Group A Streptococcus, and septic shock, which led to the amputations.
Tessa Masi appointed to Manitoba Chamber of Commerce Board
The Steinbach Chamber’s Executive Director has officially joined the Manitoba Chamber of Commerce’s 2025/26 Board of Directors as a newly appointed Director.
Tessa Masi says new board members were officially welcomed at the recent Manitoba Chamber annual general meeting.
“I am very honoured to be one of them as an incoming board member, specifically to represent the chambers in our area, in Manitoba.”
FSG Outdoor Show to spotlight local hunting and fishing culture
The first ever FSG Outdoor Show will be taking place on Saturday, May 17th at Friedensfeld Community Hall from 9am until 4pm.
Trevor Fehr is the owner and operator of Fehr’s Sporting Goods (FSG) in Steinbach. He says the idea for the show came to him because many members of his family own businesses in other provinces, and have been putting together shows for several years. He realized there was a gap in the market here in Southeast Manitoba.
