Steinbach runner inducted into Manitoba Runners' Association Hall of Fame
A man from Steinbach was inducted into the Manitoba Runners' Association Hall of Fame this week. Nick Paulet was inducted under the Builder category.
For Paulet, his competitive running career started when he was in his early 20s. As a police officer, Paulet learned of a group of officers from Edmonton that was attempting to complete the Ironman Canada Triathlon, while raising money for the Canadian Cancer Society. Paulet ended up being part of a group of officers in 2002 that took on this challenge.
Smile Cookie week already exceeds expectations in Steinbach

Some Conservative MPs voice support for Poilievre as party stays silent on next moves
Some Conservative MPs are expressing support for party leader Pierre Poilievre after he lost both the federal election and his own seat on Monday.
In his concession speech early Tuesday morning, Poilievre indicated he would stay on as leader. The Conservative party did not respond when asked Wednesday whether he has officially decided to stay.
"My view is he's not going anywhere," said Kory Teneycke, Ontario Premier Doug Ford's former campaign manager and a former director of communications for former prime minister Stephen Harper.
Defeated Manitoba Tory leadership candidate wants to win seat in byelection
Wally Daudrich, who was recently defeated in the race to lead Manitoba's Opposition Progressive Conservatives, says he remains a "loyal" member of the party and still plans on seeking the Tory nomination to run in a byelection.
The hotel owner and longtime party board member says he hopes to run uncontested in the Spruce Woods constituency.
"I've been vetted (by) the party. I have gone through all those hoops … and I believe I'm ready to run as a candidate," Daudrich said in an interview Wednesday.

'Very, very odd': Funnel cloud surprises Kleefeld family on calm spring day
A funnel cloud was spotted over Kleefeld late Wednesday afternoon, surprising residents who weren’t expecting any severe weather.
Lorissa Spence and her children noticed the formation shortly after 5 p.m. while at their home on the north side of Kleefeld. Spence, who describes her family as avid storm watchers, said her daughter was the first to spot something strange in the sky.
“We looked out the window and—yeah—it was very, very odd,” Spence said. “I zoomed in with my phone and sure enough, it was rotating.”
Schinkel Properties thanks first responders following Winkler hotel fire
On April 29, a fire was reported on the roof of the Quality Inn & Suites in Winkler.
The building, which is connected to Smitty’s and located on Main Street, has long been a recognizable part of the community and is owned and operated by Schinkel Properties of Steinbach.
As thick smoke poured from the structure, portions of Main Street and Highway 14 were shut down.
Longest Ballot group declares victory in Poilievre's former riding amid criticism
A group trying to make a case for electoral reform by creating very long ballots is declaring victory in this week's election — even as critics accuse it of indulging in stunts that undermine democracy.
"It's been a success," said Mark Moutter, one of dozens of protest candidates who ran in the Ottawa riding of Carleton.
"I've never seen people looking more optimistically at electoral reform, ever."
Manitoba Agriculture issues first crop report of the season
Manitoba Agriculture has released its first crop report of the season, providing valuable insights into the current state of seeding and livestock activities across the province.
Oilseed Specialist Sonya Wilson says seeding is just getting underway, with provincial seeding progress at approximately three per cent. This is ahead of the five-year average of one per cent. Farmers are currently planting spring wheat, peas, and a small amount of oats, particularly in areas west of Brandon and near Rapid City, with some activity in other regions as well.
