More details released from Thursday morning crashes in Steinbach

RCMP have provided more details from Thursday morning's two crashes on the west edge of Steinbach.

The first one happened around 9 am at the intersection of Highway 52 and Industrial Road. According to police, a pickup truck was stopped at the red light when it was rear-ended by another pickup truck. Both occupants were transported to hospital with minor injuries.

Dr. Kelly Turkington, a plant pathologist at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada in Lacombe says seed treatments can effectively control seed-borne diseases such as Fusarium, spot blotch pathogens in cereals, and loose smut in barley. 

Hanover man busted after falling asleep in Niverville car wash

A man from Hanover has been arrested after he was found snoozing in the Niverville car wash. 

On Wednesday at 8:30 am, St. Pierre RCMP responded to a suspicious vehicle inside the car wash on Main Street. Officers arrived and allegedly found a parked vehicle inside a wash bay, with a man sleeping in the driver's seat.

Police say the man did not have a license and his vehicle was not registered.

Inside the vehicle, RCMP located cocaine, methamphetamine, and other narcotics along with drug paraphernalia. Some of the drugs were hidden inside a light bulb.

Two separate crashes slow morning drive in Steinbach

It was a busy morning for Steinbach Fire Department.
    
Fire Chief Kel Toews says they responded to two separate crashes on the western edge of Steinbach. The first crash happened around 9 am at the intersection of Highway 52 and Industrial Road. 

"No extrication," says Toews. "I know two people were transported, but I don't know the nature of their injuries."

Taxes going up this year for most Hanover residents

Council for the Rural Municipality of Hanover has approved its 2025 financial plan. 

Chief Financial Officer Derek Decru says even though the mill rate is not rising this year, most residents will see their taxes go up. That is because it was a reassessment year and Decru says in Hanover the average increase in assessment from 2024 is 20.2 per cent. 

Two additional measles cases identified in Southern Health-Santé Sud

Manitoba Health has announced two new confirmed cases of measles in the Southern Health-Santé Sud region with recent international travel to Mexico.

In a news release issued Wednesday evening, it was also announced the individuals both attended Southwood School in Schanzenfeld in the Garden Valley School Division during the infectious period.

One lane of Highway 52 closed following collision near Industrial Road

One lane of Highway 52 is closed just east of Industrial Road following a two-vehicle collision. 

Emergency services were called to the crash around 9 a.m. Thursday morning.  

As of 9:20 a.m. the right lane of eastbound Highway 52 remains closed with traffic moving slowly in the left eastbound lane.  

Westbound traffic is unaffected.

Henry Thiessen, 88, of Winnipeg formerly of Stuartburn, passed away Tuesday, April 22nd at Heritage Lodge. He is survived by his wife Susan, 1 daughter, 2 sons, 1 sister, 6 brothers and their families. He was predeceased by his parents Jacob and Ana Thiessen, 2 sons, 3 sisters and 6 brothers. 
The funeral service for Henry Thiessen will be held Sunday, 11am at Friends Funeral Service, 2146 Main Street, with burial at Reinfeld Cemetery. 
Viewing will be at the chapel one hour prior to the service. 

Canadian Wild Pig Summit Returns for Second Year

The second annual Canadian Wild Pig Summit is set to take place on April 29th. This virtual event will feature a morning of presentations focusing on wild pig monitoring programs and recommendations from Indigenous communities regarding the Canadian Invasive Wild Pig Strategy.

Organized by Manitoba Pork, Squeal on Pigs Manitoba, and Animal Health Canada, the summit aims to address the growing wild pig population in Western Canada. These animals pose significant dangers to people and livestock and cause considerable environmental damage.
