Alert Ready test happening this afternoon

Do not be surprised to hear an emergency test go off on your phone this afternoon. That same test will be heard on local radio stations.

Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure's Emergency Management Organization says this is an Alert Ready test through the National Public Alerting System. It will go out on multiple communication channels, including AM1250, MIX 96.7FM, and COUNTRY 107.7FM. The test will come down at 1:55 pm. 

Steinbach Junior curlers shine with Gold and Silver in Carman

The Steinbach Curling Club had an impressive showing at the bonspiel in Carman this past weekend, marking the official start to the bonspiel season for two local teams.

The U13 girls' team, coming off a strong finish in last year's circuit, lived up to expectations with a perfect 3-0 record in the round robin.

They continued their dominant play in the gold medal game, securing a 5-1 victory to claim first place.

Meanwhile, the U18 boys team also had an outstanding weekend in a highly competitive draw.

Border crossing hours being slashed in southeast

Three border crossings in southeastern Manitoba will see their hours of service reduced beginning early in the new year.

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has announced that it plans to adjust hours of service at 35 land ports of entry, across Canada, as of 12:01 am local time on January 6, 2025. The list includes 12 crossings in Manitoba; three of those are in the southeast at Piney, South Junction and Tolstoi.

Government spending in limbo as Tories, Liberals continue game of chicken in House

Treasury Board President Anita Anand is warning that if the House of Commons doesn't get back to regular business, some government departments might be in financial trouble.

On Monday, Anand tabled a supplementary estimates request for $21.6 billion to fund programs including housing, dental care and the national school food program.

One of the biggest-ticket items is $970.8 million for compensation adjustments for civil servants as a result of collective bargaining agreements.

'My heart sank': Trial hears diapers, mittens set off search for family found frozen

A U.S. border patrol intelligence agent recalled Tuesday feeling horrified when he realized a group of migrants from India, including a young child, were out in a freezing blizzard on a stretch of open prairie at the border between Manitoba and Minnesota.

"My heart sank ... because there's more people out there," Daniel Huguley testified at the trial of two accused human smugglers. 

Some adult migrants had already been picked up after trying to walk undetected across the border on Jan. 19, 2022. One of them had a backpack, and Huguley said he looked inside.

She is survived by 5 daughters, 4 sons, 4 sisters, 3 brothers, and their families. She was predeceased by her husband Jacob A. Dueck, infant twin daughters, 1 granddaughter, 1 grandson, and 2 brothers. 
The funeral service for Margaret Dueck will be held Saturday, 2pm at Rosenort EMC with private family burial prior to the service at the church cemetery. 

Perfect 10: Pistons pot double digits and push win streak to 10

Saskatchewan MLA says he's ready to serve as new Minister of Agriculture

The Saskatchewan Party has announced their cabinet for their upcoming term, with the southeast seeing some new representation.

Daryl Harrison, the MLA for the Cannington constituency, will be serving as the Minister of Agriculture.

Harrison says that he's honoured to serve, bringing with him first-hand experience in the industry.
