Steinbach officials explain what a public hearing is and why it matters

Steinbach residents regularly see public hearing notices posted on properties or listed in the news, but many may not know what a public hearing actually involves.

Mayor Earl Funk says public hearings are a key part of the city’s decision-making process, offering residents a formal opportunity to speak directly to Council—most often on land use matters such as zoning changes or conditional use applications.

Friesen Avenue closure begins Monday for sewer and water line work

Drivers in Steinbach can expect changes to their commute starting Monday as a portion of Friesen Avenue closes for underground infrastructure work.

The City of Steinbach says Friesen Avenue between Main Street and Elmdale Street will be closed beginning April 7 as crews begin extending the sewer and water main lines. The closure will remain in effect until further notice.

The left-turn lane for southbound traffic on Main Street at Friesen Avenue will also be closed, and northbound drivers on Main Street will not be allowed to turn right at Friesen.

Aces reign after thrilling overtime win to capture championship

Just as it looked like the Ste. Anne Aces and Killarney Shamrocks would be heading to a game three, the Aces stepped up and found a way to tie the game late then win in overtime, capturing the championship.

There was a buzz in the Killarney arena as fans from both sides packed the stands.

They were treated to an incredible hockey game with both sides going back and forth, putting on a show.

Trailing 5-4 with seconds remaining, the Aces found the back of the net to tie the game 5-5, bringing the many supporters of the orange to their feet.

Fire quickly extinguished in Aspen Grove mobile home park

A quick response from the Steinbach Fire Department and the use of fire extinguishers helped prevent a mobile home fire from spreading on Saturday.

Crews were called around noon to a residence on Aspen Five Drive in the Aspen Grove mobile home park. While smoke was not visible from the street, firefighters worked inside the home and under the unit to ensure the fire was fully out.

Uncle shares update on Tasha Wiese’s ongoing recovery

Tasha Wiese continues to battle serious health complications after undergoing a life-changing amputation.  

Her family, including her uncle Bryan Bartel, is deeply grateful for the community’s support and the care Tasha is receiving at the Health Sciences Centre. However, it is still an extremely difficult time.  

Ritchot Mayor challenges residents to try beating him in inaugural running race

The Mayor for Ritchot has put out a challenge to his residents. There is a 5km race being planned for St. Adolphe this fall, and Chris Ewen says he intends to win it.

"I'm going to put it out there, I'm going to win this 5k," says Ewen. "I am very, very athletic when I need to be. So, watch out Ritchot because I'm coming."

Province commits to $900K to 4-H Manitoba over next three years

The Province of Manitoba announced a $300,000 commitment per year for three years, for a total of $900,000, to 4-H Manitoba to continue the great work that they do with our young individuals and experienced individuals, says Ag Minister Ron Kostyshyn. "Because they're the ones with the knowledge, and they want to share their knowledge with the young 4-H'ers of the world."

He made the announcement earlier this week at the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair in Brandon.
