‘It’s fun and rewarding’; Steinbach and Area Animal Rescue calls for volunteers
Steinbach and Area Animal Rescue (SAAR) is putting out a call for volunteers to help make sure their furry residents are fed, loved, and well cared for.
Volunteer Coordinator Kyanna Brown says the rescue is looking for animal lovers who can commit to helping during either morning or evening shifts.
Southeast Helping Hands preparing at least 365 Easter food hampers
Southeast Helping Hands (SEHH) is working on preparing 365 food hampers for Easter.
Ken Dyck, the organization's operations manager, says before a group comes to put hampers together, volunteers count out supplies they have.
This year, he says hampers—which will be distributed on April 16 between 2 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.— will include two variety soups.
"That's 365 times two. It cleans out the shelf very quickly," Dyck says.
Steinbach curlers earn medals to close out junior season
Steinbach’s junior curlers closed out the 2024-25 season with strong performances at two major events in Winnipeg — the Curl Canada RockFest skills competition and the annual junior season wind-up bonspiel.
The Curl Canada RockFest Man-Sask event wrapped up Saturday after three days of competition. Nearly 100 U15 curlers from across the Prairies gathered for the individual skills challenge, and Steinbach had seven curlers qualify for the event.
One of the highlights came in the female division, where Ahinoam Ruka brought home the bronze medal.

Anna Peters nee Penner, 94, of Morden formerly of Osterwick, passed away Thursday April 10th at Boundary Trails Health Centre. She is survived by 3 daughters, 1 son and their families. She was predeceased by her husband Frank Peters.
The funeral service for Anna Peters nee Penner will be held Tuesday, April 15th at 2pm at Maranatha Christian Fellowship Church Winkler with burial at Chapel Cemetery Morden.
Viewing will be held at Wiebe Funeral Chapel, Morden Monday, April 14th from 1 to 8pm.

Wilhelm Reimer appeared before Council on Wednesday requesting permission to operate a home-based auto sales business along Aurora Drive.

A casual drive turned into an unforgettable moment for Tracie MacLeod last weekend, when she came across a jaw-dropping sight just outside La Broquerie—hundreds of bald eagles gathered in a farmer’s field.
“I was driving east from Steinbach on Highway 52, just past the old fire hall, when I looked over and saw what had to be over a hundred eagles sitting in a field,” said MacLeod. “I pulled over and took a photo right away because I knew no one would believe me.”
While it’s not unusual to spot an eagle or two in the area, this kind of mass gathering is far from common.
