Hundreds remain evacuated as early, massive northern wildfires refuse to be suppressed
Saskatchewan’s wildfire crisis continues to escalate this week, with 52 active fires burning across the province as of July 21, including 13 that remain uncontained.
Some of the largest and most aggressive wildfires of the season are still threatening northern communities, despite many weeks of intensive, risky firefighting efforts and intermittent precipitation.

Air quality issues to persist through much of the week: ECCC
According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, we’re in for at least another day of thick wildfire smoke here in Moose Jaw, with only a brief reprieve expected for mid-week.
The smoke — primarily from fires raging in northern Saskatchewan and Manitoba — is being driven southwards, fueling some of the worst air quality conditions in the region.
Several models of above-ground pools recalled due to drowning hazard
Multiple models of above-ground pools manufactured by Bestway, Intex and Polygroup 48 inches (122 cm) or taller with compression straps running on the outside and over the vertical support legs are being recalled due to drowning hazards.
This is due to a potential foothold created by the compression strap, which could allow a child access to the pool.
As of July 17, 2025, there have been no reports of incidents or injuries in Canada. However, there were three reports of incidents and nine reports of drownings in the United States.
The recall includes:
Planned outage at water treatment planned scheduled for tomorrow
Construction at the Buffalo Pound Water Treatment Plant (BPWTP) is leading to another planned production outage, scheduled to begin tomorrow at 7 a.m.
While the outage is expected to last for 12 hours, residents are advised that reservoir capacity will allow water service to continue uninterrupted for the duration of the outage.
Water and wastewater staff with the City of Moose Jaw will monitor reservoir levels during the outage and updates will be provided if any changes to the project occur.
Production is slated to resume at 7 p.m. tomorrow.
McCain Foods looks for new processing potatoes
Company works with Farming Smarter Association as it searches for options other than the century-old Russet Burbank variety.
Russet Burbank has been the go to potato variety for Canadian farmers and consumers.
This year, McCain Foods in Chin, Alta., has entered a corporate partnership with the Farming Smarter Association to explore the viability of other varieties in its food processing plant for farmers to consider.
Farming Smarter is using one of its commercial plots to do a research trial growing four varieties using six treatments.
Local talent off to Canada West Performing Arts Festival
The Canada West Performing Arts Festival is happening in Saskatoon July 24 to 26. Performers from Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia will take the stage at the University of Saskatchewan.
Some of the performers include local talent from Moose Jaw.

The Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan wants strychnine reinstated under emergency use provisions.
The organization has asked the federal agriculture and health ministers to “urgently” consider the request.

Genesis Fertilizers says it has hit ‘turning point’
Firm behind plan to build Saskatchewan fertilizer plant had to recently deal with former CEO’s financial problems
It is full steam ahead at Genesis Fertilizers despite a tumultuous June, say proponents of the proposed Saskatchewan mega-project.
“It’s not a matter of if, it’s a matter of when we get this project off the ground,” said Terry Drabiuk, vice-president of business development with Genesis.
The project is a proposed $2.89 billion, farmer-owned nitrogen fertilizer plant to be built in Belle Plaine, Sask.
Miller Express complete comeback win over Regina
The Moose Jaw Miller Express came from behind to pick up an 11-10 win over the Regina Red Sox last night at Ross Wells Park. It was a make-up game for Saturday's postponement due to rain.
Regina opened with three runs in the top of the first inning, but Moose Jaw replied with two runs in the bottom half. Thomas Soto scored on a catcher’s error, and Tanner DeGrazia hit a single to drive home Austin Gurney.
