Hwy 17 closed from Kenora to Vermilion Bay due to collision

UPDATE: 3:15 p.m. - the west lane of traffic has reopened. Drivers are asked to use caution in the area.


Highway 17 is closed in both directions between Kenora and Vermilion Bay.

Travel not advised through North Dakota, snow emergency declared

While a Colorado low is just skimming southern Manitoba, it's having major impacts just south of the border, and travellers should think twice before heading south.

So far Grand Forks, N.D., has received at least nine inches (22 centimetres) of wet, heavy snow, and there's no sign of it letting up. "It's big, ol' fat flakes," Josh Jones of Your Q-FM in Grand Forks tells Golden West. "Some parts of the city seem to have closer to a foot of snow and it's still coming down."

Marchessault scores twice, Golden Knights hang on for 6-5 win over Jets

Jonathan Marchessault was happy to take advantage of the Winnipeg Jets.

The Vegas Golden Knights forward scored his second power-play goal late in the third period to break a tie and help lift his team to a 6-5 victory over the Jets on Tuesday. 

“I thought our power play looked good in the third, and sometimes you need the power play to win games and tonight it did,” Marchessault said. 

Vegas went 2-for-3 with the man advantage Tuesday while Winnipeg was 1-for-2.

NWO drivers paying 4th most expensive fuel in Canada

Northwestern Ontario’s fuel prices are dropping – but we’re still paying some of the most expensive prices across Canada.

As of December 13, fuel stations in Kenora are reporting prices at 160.9 per litre – a drop of 10 cents from December 12’s prices. Prices are also now sitting at 172.9 in Dryden, 158.2 in Sioux Lookout and 147.9 in Red Lake, for a regional average price of 170.9.

Pinecrest reports new COVID-19 outbreak ahead of holidays

Kenora’s Pinecrest Home for the Aged is reporting its sixth COVID-19 outbreak of the year.

On December 10, the Northwestern Health Unit declared a COVID-19 outbreak in Pinecrest’s Unit #1, with two residents who have tested positive.

As a result, visitor restrictions are as follows in Unit #1:

- One essential caregiver for positive residents, unless otherwise approved,
- Two essential caregivers for remaining residents, unless otherwise approved,
- No designated caregiver under the age of 18,
- No general visitors,

RCMP: Whiteshell hotel fire deliberately set

The RCMP has confirmed that the fire that destroyed a Whiteshell landmark last week was deliberately set.

On Thursday at 3:50 am, officers from the Whitemouth and Lac du Bonnet RCMP detachments were called to the Rennie Hotel and post office as a fire was noted inside. Both buildings were destroyed. 

Police say no injuries were reported.

Russ Gawluk is Reeve for the Rural Municipality of Reynolds. He says the hotel had been closed for the last couple of months but says it was a huge part of the community.
