Two police officers dead after shooting at home in Innisfil, Ont.

Police north of Toronto say two officers are dead after they were shot while responding to a disturbance call on Tuesday night. 

South Simcoe Police Service say the shooting happened at a home in the town of Innisfil, Ont., just before 8 p.m.

Police say both officers were taken to a nearby hospital, where one officer died. 

They say the second officer later died after he was airlifted to a Toronto trauma centre in critical condition.

Ontario's police watchdog agency, the Special Investigations Unit, has been called in to investigate.

As part of the Indigenous Ingenuity: Timeless Inventions exhibit at the Lake of the Discovery Centre, a Fall Harvest Smoke & Feast will be offered to the community this weekend. 

The free event will take place on Saturday, October 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Discovery Centre and will feature an array of smoking activities, which will be led by Ron P McDonald and Glen Mousseau. There will be smokers, firewood, moose meat and fish (walleye/white fish/sturgeon) all sourced and provided at the site.

Ontario funds major service expansion for at-risk youth in Kenora, NWO

A service supporting youth dealing with mental health concerns will see a major expansion after an investment from the provincial government.

Kenora – Rainy River MPP, Minister of Indigenous Affairs and Minister of Northern Development, Greg Rickford joined Associate Minister for Mental Health and Addictions, Michael Tibollo, in Kenora today to announce a $1.7 million investment into the Kenora Chiefs Advisory’s Youth and Family Wellness Camp.

New coach Bowness brings fresh approach to Winnipeg Jets this season

A big smile crossed Nate Schmidt's face as he described the fresh approach and one fun surprise during a practice at Winnipeg Jets training camp.

New Jets head coach Rick Bowness had players scrimmaging with opposite-handed sticks, plus goalies Connor Hellebuyck and David Rittich manned the creases without sticks. 

"It was amazing. I loved it," said Schmidt, who's entering his 10th NHL season. "Variety is the spice of life and you add new things in your life, I think it just makes everyone a little more well-rounded.

Winnipeg wants to host Grey Cup championship, Manitoba offers $5.5M to help bid

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are bidding to host the Canadian Football League Grey Cup championship in either 2024 or 2025, and the Manitoba government is offering up to $5.5 million to help the bid.

Winnipeg is a natural choice, given the club's back-to-back wins in the last two championships, Premier Heather Stefanson said.

She expects the economic benefits to outweigh the cost, and said city hall is expected to offer up to $1.5 million.

Scott Smith out as Hockey Canada's president and CEO; board of directors resigns

Scott Smith spent nearly three decades climbing the ladder at Hockey Canada.

He lasted just over three months at the top following a series of scandals that have rocked the sport's national organization to its core.

Smith is out as Hockey Canada's president and CEO, the embattled federation announced Tuesday. 

The board of directors has also resigned.
