It's playoff time in the NHL and if there is a hockey fan in your life, they may be a little tied up for the next couple of months. Millions of people in Canada tune in each night and this year, four Canadian teams have a legitimate shot to win. It was 1993 when Montreal last hoisted the cup and a Canadian team has not won the big trophy since.

Every business begins with an entrepreneur identifying a need in their community, and in the case of Travis Froese owner of Total Mechanical & Plumbing in Winkler, it was relationship building which was the seed which grew into the HVAC and plumbing business located at 510 Norland Drive.

Summer in the City is the premiere festival celebrating everything that makes Southeastern Manitoba great, and this year promises to be even better than the last.  

As Executive Director of the Steinbach Arts Council, David Klassen coordinates stage and production at Summer in the City. He says they always make sure the quality of the festival’s headliners is high. 

On the very edge of the Sandilands Provincial Forest, a mere twenty-minute drive from Steinbach, there’s a very special place where you can dig your toes in the sand, cool off in the water… even enjoy a lunch on a floating picnic table! 

“Our floating picnic tables are very popular,” laughs Hilary Holmes. As one of the owners of The Twisted Root RV Park, she’s almost surprised at their success.  

It all began back in 2014, when she and her husband Brad purchased the property next to their Marchand home.

When a business grows to more than 10 times its original size in less than 20 years, it’s clearly doing something right.

“My dad and I started out in 2007,” recalls Patrick Wilson, co-owner and manager of Taxi4U. “We successfully went 24/7 from the beginning – as much of a stretch as that was at the time – and we’ve just kind of grown steadily ever since.”

From the pair of vehicles the start-up cab company operated those 17 years ago, Taxi4U has expanded to a fleet of more than 20. And Wilson is under no illusions as to how that success has come about.

“Excellence through opportunity.”

There is excitement in the halls at Steinbach Christian School these days, created by the growing K-12 institution’s focus on providing new opportunities and living with purpose.

“More than 90% of our high school students are involved in a co-curricular activity,” says Thor Barkman, SCS principal. “By giving students opportunities to be involved, they can start to understand who they are and what they’re good at.”

It’s not about who you impress. It’s about who you impact!

I read this statement a few weeks ago and it has resonated with me repeatedly since that time. I’ve been reflecting on my impact. What is the impact of my words, my actions, my thoughts, my facial expressions, my whole life?
