Fort Nelson residents returning home after wildfire evacuation

The Mayor of Fort Nelson says residents are happy to be back home after being evacuated due to wildfires more than two weeks ago. 

Rob Fraser says the joy of evacuees returning is still mixed with apprehension since the community had never before experienced a wildfire evacuation. Fraser says a banner hung from a ladder truck welcomed home residents returning from the evacuation after the order was lifted early Monday.

Plant protein companies looking to expand usage and supply of Canadian lupin

Protein Industries Canada is looking to promote a new project to help entice farmers to use an up-and-coming legume in fields.

They announced the Lupin platform, along with PURIS Holdings and YOSO Canada, to expand the Canadian lupin ecosystem by increasing opportunities for farmers and ingredient processors and bringing new plant-based protein products to market.

The Weather Network is predicting more sunshine and warmer temperatures for the summer.

The weather broadcaster's annual summer forecast released Wednesday indicates Canada will be blanketed in heat over the next three months as the country sees fewer rainy days and several regions experience humid conditions.

"We'd be very surprised, very surprised, if this didn't turn out overall as a warm summer," Chris Scott, the Weather Network's chief meteorologist, said in an interview.

Trudeau to attend G7 summit in Italy, Ukraine peace summit in Switzerland

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is set to attend the G7 leaders' summit next month in Italy, followed by the Ukraine peace summit in Switzerland. 

In a news release today, the Prime Minister's Office says Trudeau's focus at the G7 summit will be on highlighting the importance of democracy, promoting fair economic growth and combating foreign interference.

Trudeau's office says he will also hold bilateral meetings with his counterparts and discuss the Israel-Hamas and Russia-Ukraine wars.

Five Ontario school boards, two schools join legal fight against social media giants

Five more Ontario school boards and two private schools have joined the multi-billion-dollar legal fight against social media giants Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat, accusing their parent companies of leaving educators to manage the fallout from their allegedly addictive products. 

They join some of Ontario's largest school boards who filed suits in March alleging the platforms are negligently designed for compulsive use and have rewired the way children think, behave and learn.

Canadians show support for relieving farms of carbon tax

A recent Leger poll for the Canadian Teachers Federation shows that respondents from around the country feel that farmers shouldn't have to pay carbon taxes on natural gas and propane.

The question showed that a net 70 per cent of respondents agreed, with 39 per cent strongly supporting it and 31 per cent somewhat supporting it.

Meanwhile, a net 15 per cent opposed taking that carbon tax off with 8 per cent somewhat opposing it and 7 per cent strongly opposing it.

High school student reprimanded after talking about Jesus in graduation speech

A Northern Kentucky high school student is being withheld his diploma, after bringing up Jesus during his graduation speech. 

Over the weekend, Micah Price decided to tell his classmates that Jesus Christ was the answer, the way, the truth and life. This upset the school administration.

"I was told I wasn't allowed to bring up Christ in my speech," said Micah Price in a TikTok video. "I did anyways."
