Five pro hockey players facing sex assault charges expected to plead not guilty

Five players from Canada's 2018 world junior hockey team are facing sexual assault charges, but so far, it appears as if only one player has surrendered to police.

Alex Formenton, who plays internationally, surrendered to police in London, Ontario, on Sunday. His lawyer confirmed that he has been charged in connection with the case, and said the player would plead not guilty.

Local swim club prepares swimmers for Olympic trials

As the world prepares for the 2024 Olympics in Paris, the Grande Prairie Piranhas, our city’s year round competitive swim club, is preparing 7 swimmers for Swim Canada’s upcoming Olympic Trials.

From this event, Canada’s Olympic swim team will be identified, and the club is hopeful to have swimmers on that competitive roster.

Northwestern Polytechnic installs new president

Northwestern Polytechnic (NWP) officially welcomed Dr. Vanessa Sheane as its 11th president during an installation ceremony held this past Monday at the Douglas J. Cardinal Performing Arts Centre.

More than 300 attendees including dignitaries, local leaders, faculty and staff, students, and members of the community took in the event which featured heartfelt speeches, presentations, and performances by local musical artists and three-time world champion Indigenous hoop dancer Dallas Arcand.

Prairie Cattle Marketing Update

The cattle industry has seen strong prices in the feeder markets, with the lightweight feeder cattle bringing the largest average price increases compared to the previous week. 

According to the Manitoba Cattle Marketing Report, the 401 to 500 pound steers had an average price of $411.88 per cwt and $351.08 per cwt for the same weight of heifers. The biggest jump for feeder steers came in the 501 - 600 pound category for an average of $ 389.21 per cwt.

D1-D2 cows averaged $119.88 per cwt, while D3 cows averaged $103.20 per cwt

$11.3 million for a state-of-the-art power engineering lab at Northwestern Polytechnic

The provincial government is investing $11.3-million to support the development and building of the new power engineering lab at Northwestern Polytechnic’s Grande Prairie campus and create space for an additional 60 students. The new facility will have upgraded and modern equipment for third and fourth class power engineering training.  

Interprovincial Fuel Solutions Ltd. to further expand development in the Greenview Industrial Gateway

MD of Greenview Council approved a Memorandum of Understanding with Interprovincial Fuel Solutions Ltd. (IFS) to purchase approximately 200 acres (81 hectares) in the Greenview Industrial Gateway at the January 23 regular council meeting.
