$11.3 million for a state-of-the-art power engineering lab at Northwestern Polytechnic

The provincial government is investing $11.3-million to support the development and building of the new power engineering lab at Northwestern Polytechnic’s Grande Prairie campus and create space for an additional 60 students. The new facility will have upgraded and modern equipment for third and fourth class power engineering training.

MD of Greenview Council approved a Memorandum of Understanding with Interprovincial Fuel Solutions Ltd. (IFS) to purchase approximately 200 acres (81 hectares) in the Greenview Industrial Gateway at the January 23 regular council meeting.

Warmer weather is helping the railways recover

The return to warmer weather is helping the railways clear some of the backlog after the slowdown in grain movement during the recent cold snap.

Elizabeth Hucker, CPKC's assistant vice president of sales and marketing for bulk says that extreme cold dipped as far as Louisiana, and covered much of CPKC's network. 

She says operations slowed due to the cold, but thanks to their experienced crews they were able to keep things moving.

School bus cancellations for Tuesday, January 30th

Due to the wind and road conditions some school buses are cancelled for the day.

Buses are cancelled all day in the Beaverlodge attendance area (Wembley, Elmworth, Beaverlodge, Hythe), Penson School, Bezanson School, and Eaglesham School.

Buses are also cancelled for all Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation buses due to unsafe driving conditions.

Multiple power outages throughout the Peace Country

Due to the high winds today, some areas in the City of Grande Prairie and surrounding areas are without power. 

As well, some areas in the Dawson Creek to Valleyveiw areas are also out. 

According to the ATCO outage map, power should be restored around between 11 am - 11:30 am.

As deadline looms, Liberals say Canada not ready to expand assisted dying eligibility

The federal government is hitting pause on its plans to make medical assistance in dying available to people whose only medical condition is a mental illness — and Health Minister Mark Holland is offering no clues about a new timeline.

The country is not yet ready to take such a significant step, Holland acknowledged Monday, concurring with a findings of a joint parliamentary committee that released its final report earlier in the day.
