Break and Enter suspect apprehended in Fort St. John

RCMP responded a break and enter on January 6, 2024 at 2:23am at a business on the 9400 block of 100th Street in Fort St. John. 

Officers observed that entry to the business had been made through a smashed glass front door.  The suspect was attempting to hide from police inside the premises and was arrested without incident. 

The suspect, Michael Underhill, was held for court and is facing one charge of Break and Enter with Intent.

Minor hockey WILL happen this weekend despite cold temperatures

Despite the cold weather, minor hockey will take place all over the City and County this weekend at Design Works Centre, Dave Barr Arena, Bonnetts Energy Centre and the County Chris McMillan Arena.

At the Design Works Centre the U9 Mega Tournament runs all weekend with 38 teams. There is also a Retro U-18 AAA game at the Dave Barr Arena on Saturday at 6 pm.

The Grande Prairie Storm are also in action at Bonnetts with a 7pm game against Canmore tonight and a 6pm match against Olds on Saturday.

'Our family has fallen apart': Sentencing for man who ran over Saskatchewan Mountie

Melanie Patton says the loss of her only son, a Saskatchewan Mountie who was run over and killed more than two years ago, has left a void that can’t be filled. 

She told a sentencing hearing Thursday that she has lost all joy.

"Nothing is the same. Our family has fallen apart," the mother told the judge in her victim impact statement. 

“Gatherings are small and quiet, and I dread the holidays.”

Cattle can handle the cold, but extra attention is needed with the bitter cold temperatures

Cattle can handle fairly cold temperatures, but extra measures are needed when the temperature hits -20 or colder.

Cold snap causes huge jump in roadside assistance

Between Tuesday, Jan 9, and the end of the day Thursday, Jan. 11, AMA received more than 10,000 requests for roadside assistance across the province—and that number continues to climb given the extreme cold.

In parts of Alberta, call volume has been as high as nine times the norm for this time of year, with dead batteries being the biggest culprit.

In extreme cold, AMA receives requests for Roadside Assistance roughly every 40 seconds—and calls about dead batteries can spike by six times the usual number.

Martin Scorsese directing new film about Jesus in 2024

Award-winning director Martin Scorsese is often known for his violent films and yet this year he is directing a new film about Jesus Christ. 

During the summer of 2023, Scorsese met with Pope Francis during a cinematic event in Italy and the meeting inspired him to make his next film about Jesus. 

In the past, he's directed a few films with faith content including the controversial The Last Temptation of Christ in 1988 and then again in 2016 with Silence

This new film is based on Shūsaku Endō’s 1978 book A Life of Jesus. 

Former federal NDP leader Ed Broadbent, social democracy stalwart, dead at 87

Ed Broadbent, the affable advocate of social democracy whose principled leadership helped build the modern New Democratic Party and made him a titan of 20th century Canadian politics, has died. He was 87.

Broadbent was "a fierce champion for ordinary Canadians," said a statement Thursday from the eponymous, Ottawa-based think tank he founded in 2011 to propagate his belief in social and economic justice.
