Poilievre calls on Liberals to enact Conservative election pledges on housing

Pierre Poilievre is encouraging Prime Minister Mark Carney to adopt Conservative plans to deal with the country's housing crisis, which he said is entering a new phase as prices begin to fall in some cities.

At a press conference Tuesday in Brampton, Ont., the Conservative leader blamed Liberal policies for the housing crunch and invited the government to "steal our best ideas."

"They first inflated the housing bubble, and now Liberals are bursting the housing bubble," he said, noting that construction is slowing in Ontario.

Fiscal experts say Ottawa will have to be transparent with Canadians in the upcoming fall budget to justify a seismic shift in spending away from government programs and toward defence and infrastructure.

The federal Liberals are expected to table the annual budget sometime this fall, possibly as early as next month, after forgoing the traditional spring budget.

Saskatchewan schools invited to apply for new playground funding

Schools across Saskatchewan can now apply for provincial funding to help build or improve playgrounds.

Applications opened Tuesday for the new School Playground Equipment Grant program, which offers up to $50,000 in matching funds for projects on school-operated property. Funding can be used to build new playgrounds, add equipment, or replace existing components.

Groundbreaking ceremony held for Saskatchewan Protective Services Memorial

Saskatchewan marked a milestone Thursday with a groundbreaking ceremony for a new memorial honouring protective services personnel who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

The Saskatchewan Protective Services Memorial, located on Memorial Way southwest of the Legislature Building, will serve as a permanent site for families, colleagues, and the public to pay tribute to fallen first responders and other protective services workers.

Locals' face-off at Sask First U16 Top 40

Two head-to-head matchups and a singular exhibition game highlighted the Hockey Saskatchewan Sask First female U16 Top 40 showcase tournament put on this past weekend in Swift Current.

Six local players were in attendance out of the 40 players making up two teams: Team White rostering Kindersley's Iralyn Calkins, and two Rosetown natives Harper Kampen, and Jalaa Moore Jagow, while Team Green included Kerrobert's Berkley Wuttunee, Kindersley's Hayden Hilbig, and Rosetown's Charleigh Johnston.

Gateway Park and Brownlee Square set to complete Biggar’s renewal

A five-year effort to revitalize the Town of Biggar is nearing its end, following a community fundraising campaign and major donations that brought in millions of dollars.

In 2020, former residents Ina Lou and Wayne Brownlee pledged up to $2.5 million to support the project. The Brownlees committed to matching every dollar raised locally, creating the potential for $5 million in funding.

Sun West trustees highlight student art, professional development at summer events

Sun West School Division trustees spent the summer recognizing student achievements, engaging in professional development, and preparing for the year ahead.

More than 250 students entered the annual Sun West Student Art Contest, with winners selected in four grade categories. In June, trustees presented winners from their subdivisions with framed copies of their artwork and gift cards.
