Anand visiting Malaysia, Japan as Carney crafts approach to Indo-Pacific strategy

Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand is headed off to Japan and Malaysia as the Carney government shapes its diplomatic and trade approach to the Indo-Pacific region.

Anand will meet with her Japanese counterpart in Tokyo this week as the two finalize an agreement on sharing defence information and boosting trade.

On Thursday and Friday, Anand will take part in a meeting with the Association of South East Asian Nations, or ASEAN, in Malaysia.

Why Canada may not be ready for 'new reality' of flash flooding and severe storms

Ryan Ness of the Canadian Climate Institute says he's been following the "terrible tragedy" of deadly flash flooding unfolding in Texas, where more than 100 people have died.

But he's also worried Canada isn't doing enough to prevent such disasters here, saying the country needs to invest in flood mapping, infrastructure and early warning systems.

"Luckily, there are many ways that we can protect ourselves, but we have to make the effort," said Ness, who is the research director for adaptation at the policy research organization.

Statistics Canada posts 2026 Ag Census questionnaire


The 2026 Census of Agriculture questionnaire has now been published on the Statistics Canada website.

The census is conducted every five years with the last Agriculture Census being done in 2021.

For the 2026 Census of Agriculture, new categories have been added under the commodity questions to identify emerging agricultural products. 

Questions on agricultural practices have been expanded to include environmental practices and environmental sustainability.

Foot-and-mouth disease bank one step closer

Industry is applauding the federal government’s progress toward a foot-and-mouth disease vaccine bank after it awarded supply contracts to two companies.

Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health and Biogenesis Bago SA will supply vaccine products and develop the vaccine bank.

Canadian Cattle Association Saskatchewan director and former Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association president Garner Deobald, who formerly worked for Boehringer, said both companies are well respected and were good choices.

“I think it is important, for sure, to be ready,” he said.

Community turns out for Canada Day at Wilkie Museum

The Wilkie Museum marked another successful Canada Day celebration with its second annual event on July 1.

Festivities began with a pancake breakfast at the New Horizons Hall, where attendees were served flapjacks, slow-cooked ham, and hashbrown patties. Later in the day, the celebration shifted to the Ed Elder building, where bays usually reserved for the museum’s vintage vehicles, a 1929 Ford Model A and a 1954 Chevy fire truck, were cleared out for live entertainment.

Canada invests $21.5M in Alberta carbon capture projects as part of clean energy push

The federal government is putting more than $21.5 million into a series of made-in-Canada carbon capture and clean energy projects in Alberta, part of Ottawa’s broader push to reduce emissions and grow a low-carbon economy.

Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson made the announcement in Calgary on Friday, stating that the funding will support a range of initiatives, including subsurface monitoring and CO₂ storage, as well as next-generation diesel engine innovation.

Man arrested in Maple Creek in $110K romance scam

A 53-year-old man has been arrested in Saskatchewan after RCMP allege he defrauded a woman of more than $100,000 in what police describe as a romance scam.

Michael Paul Snow was taken into custody on June 24 in Maple Creek, Sask., following a Canada-wide warrant issued by Sunshine Coast RCMP. He has been charged with fraud over $5,000.

"Hang it on the wall": Rosetown beats Macklin for U19 provincial gold

Two West Central teams made the trip to Regina this past weekend for the Softball Saskatchewan U19 'C' Girls provincial championship.

The Rosetown Angels and Macklin Lakers helped make up a small four-team field along with the Regina Revenge and Moosomin Predators. After starting the tournament against each other, Rosetown and Macklin took different routes to get into the gold medal game, the undefeated Angels eventually coming out on top in Saturday's championship match.
