Suspicious vehicle report near Perdue elevator leads to impaired driving investigation

The Biggar RCMP snuffed out some potential criminal activity near Perdue last week.

Cst. Chad Mehl detailed the following in the latest Biggar RCMP report.

"A suspicious vehicle and individual was found in Ag Solutions elevator in Perdue by a complainant on August 20," read the report as the suspect then fled the scene.

The Ag Solutions location in Perdue is located along K Avenue, as upon being discovered, it seems the suspect vehicle took the 655 south instead of hopping on the main highway headed east/west.

Kindersley Court adjourns cases and hears full-day trial

Court proceedings in Kindersley were relatively quiet on Aug. 26, with two cases adjourned until Sept. 9 and one lengthy trial taking up much of the day.

Trevor Swain entered not guilty pleas to charges of assault, assault causing bodily harm and uttering threats. His trial date was set for Dec. 16.

Meanwhile, Curtis Skinner faced trial, representing himself, on charges of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, impaired driving and refusing to comply with a breath test. The trial lasted most of the day.

55+ games officially open in Swift Current

The Saskatchewan Senior Fitness 55+ Provincial Games officially opened yesterday in Swift Current.

"With that I would now open the games for 2025," said SSFA President Al Gabert in front of a large crowd at the InnovationPlex curling rink for the opening ceremony.

Almost 400 participants attended the ceremony which included the teams all marching in together and a supper. 

Gabert was impressed after the first day.

Escaped foster child, U-Haul tire theft part of busy week for Biggar RCMP

The Biggar RCMP continued a busy August with a multitude of calls over the past week.

One ongoing investigation has police seeking the public's assistance after a theft from a local tire shop.

"In the early morning hours of August 23rd, thieves drove up with a U-haul van behind Integra Tire in Biggar and stole 16 tires from the business," read the report. "Police are looking for the public’s assistance from anyone who may have witnessed the thieves load the tires."

Vermilion RCMP arrest armed suspect after shelter-in-place order

RCMP say a 49-year-old man is in custody after a firearms incident in Vermilion prompted a shelter-in-place order Saturday evening.

Police responded around 7:15 p.m. to a report of a man suffering from a gunshot wound. Investigators say the suspect fled the scene on foot while carrying a firearm, leading RCMP to advise residents in part of the community to stay indoors.

At 9:15 p.m., officers located the suspect at a local residence and arrested him without further incident.

Hot weather, solid growing conditions helping West Central crops along 

A sunny week of +30 weather is a welcome site for farmers hoping for hastened crop maturity ahead of harvest. 

The sunshine will aid already solid growing conditions in terms of topsoil moisture conditions. The West Central crop report for August 12-18 reported cropland at 91 per cent adequate (provincial average of 80), eight per cent short and one per cent surplus, while hayland topsoil moisture is 87 per cent adequate (provincial average 73) and 13 per cent short, and pasture topsoil moisture conditions are 85 per cent adequate (provincial average 67) and 15 per cent short.

Celebrating 105 years of history at the Kerrobert Courthouse

The Kerrobert Courthouse Restoration Society is marking the 105th birthday of the historic building with a community celebration and fundraiser this week.

Jessica Mitchell, a town representative with the society, said the group is focusing its efforts on a major restoration project.

“Right now we are trying to fundraise for is the foundation,” Mitchell said. “The basement foundation is what really needs to be done, which is a really big undertaking.”
