Complainant recounts alleged exploitation in Rosetown human trafficking trial

A woman at the centre of a human trafficking and sexual assault case testified Wednesday in a Rosetown courtroom, describing what she alleged was a financially and emotionally exploitative situation after arriving in Saskatchewan.

The trial involves allegations against Mohammad Masum and Sohel Haider, who were both arrested in June 2023. The men are charged with human trafficking, while Masum faces an additional charge of sexual assault. The complainant’s identity is protected by a publication ban.

More Saskatchewan schools to receive mental health support through expanded program

Five more Saskatchewan high schools will receive mental health programming this fall as part of the province’s expanded Mental Health Capacity Building (MHCB) initiative.

Education Minister Everett Hindley and Mental Health and Addictions Minister Lori Carr announced the expansion Tuesday, naming Bedford Road Collegiate in Saskatoon, Rossignol High School in Île-à-la-Crosse, Martensville High School, Holy Rosary High School in Lloydminster and Swift Current Composite High School as the new additions.

The Saskatchewan government has approved a series of changes to The Saskatchewan Employment Act, aiming to modernize the province’s labour laws in ways that support both employers and workers.

The amendments, which will take effect later this fiscal year, are designed to promote a fair and flexible workplace environment while maintaining strong employee protections. Deputy Premier and Minister of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety Jim Reiter emphasized the government’s goal of striking a balance between economic growth and workers’ rights.

P.A.R.T.Y. Program brings realism to risk awareness in Kindersley

Grade 10 students from across the Sun West School Division took part in the P.A.R.T.Y. (Prevent Alcohol and Risk-Related Trauma in Youth) program on Wednesday, May 14, in Kindersley.

The one-day awareness event brought together students from Kindersley Composite School, Eaton High School, Westcliffe Composite School and Eston Composite School. Held at Clearview Church in Kindersley, the program was presented in partnership with the Kindersley Fire Department, RCMP, EMS and Kindersley Funeral Home.

Developing: Multi-vehicle crash reported on Highway 7 near Tessier

A developing motor vehicle collision has been reported on Highway 7 near Tessier Thursday morning.

Video footage submitted to local media by A.M. Delivery shows multiple vehicles involved in the incident, including a truck overturned in the ditch. The video appears to have been taken shortly after the crash occurred.

There has been no official word yet from RCMP or emergency services regarding the number of vehicles involved, potential injuries, or the cause of the crash.

Kyle school holds grand opening after several years of renos

Local students, staff, and community members are enjoying the latest upgrades to their school after a project that took around three years to complete.

Kyle Composite School hosted its Grand Re-Opening on Monday, May 12, from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., with a chance for visitors to check out the much-needed improvements.

Penny Calvert, principal at Kyle Composite School, shared that the renovations included the resizing of the building, upgrades to the library, brighter spaces with natural light, and technology upgrades, including a new phone system.

Former Canadian Forces station in Alsask opens doors for Victoria Day tours

The Canadian Civil Defence Museum and Archives will host special guided tours on Sunday, May 18, as part of its Victoria Day weekend activities.

Tours will run at 12 p.m., 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Each tour lasts approximately one hour and 45 minutes. Visitors are asked to arrive 10 minutes early and wear closed-toe shoes.

Admission is by donation. For an additional $20 per person, attendees can take a ride in one of the museum’s Canadian military vehicles.

Macklin woman charged with drug trafficking following RCMP search

A 33-year-old Macklin woman is facing multiple charges following a search warrant executed by RCMP at a residence in the community between May 6 and May 12.

According to Unity RCMP, the woman was charged with possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking, possession of property obtained by crime, and two counts of failing to comply with a release order condition. The matter remains under investigation.
