Ottawa shows no signs of limiting MAID after UN panel calls for reversal

Ottawa is giving no sign that it intends to amend existing legislation on medical assistance in dying — something a UN committee called for earlier this spring.

The federal minister responsible for disabilities spoke at a hearing of the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities last week, about two months after the committee called on Canada to repeal the 2021 law that expanded eligibility for assisted dying to those whose deaths were not reasonably foreseeable.

ECS celebrates successful 2024-25 school year with summer vacation around the corner

The school year is just about done, as summer vacations are soon to start for students in the southeast. The Estevan Comprehensive School (ECS) has a course completion week next week, with the final day scheduled for June 26th.

James Jones, the principal at ECS, talks about what was a packed 2024-25 school year.

"I would say the year progressed really well. It's pretty incredible when you look back at all of the events that ECS hosted or was involved with, and I would say that it was a very successful academic year."

Average family to save $280 per year from Liberal tax cut: PBO

The average Canadian family will save $280 on their taxes next year from the Liberal government's planned income tax cut, the parliamentary budget officer said in an analysis released on Wednesday.

The Leger poll — released as Canada copes with its second-worst wildfire season on record — says 23 per cent of Canadians who responded said they were personally affected by extreme weather events like heat waves, floods, fires and tornadoes over the last 12 months.

Conexus, Cornerstone, and Synergy credit unions begin merger following member vote

After months of work getting a merger in place, the Conexus, Cornerstone, and Synergy credit unions will now be merging following a vote by members of the three credit unions to see if they wanted a merger to go through. The final results place 87.5 per cent of the members voting in favour from Conexus, 86.5 per cent in favour from Cornerstone and 88.7 per cent in favour from Synergy, all above the province-required minimum of 75 per cent.

Southeast Saskatchewan spotlighted for innovation at global energy event

A Southeast Saskatchewan research project is drawing international attention and helping position the region as a hub for innovation and emerging technologies.

The Petroleum Technology Research Centre’s (PTRC) Aquistore project, based near Estevan’s Boundary Dam, has earned the Suzanne West Environmental Excellence Award. The honour was presented at the Global Energy Show in Calgary.

Gord More, executive director of the Southeast Techhub (SETH), said the award reinforces the region’s leadership in applied research and large-scale infrastructure.

Grills blazing, funds raising: Taste of Summer BBQ supports St. Joseph’s MRI

The first Taste of Summer charity BBQ of the season fired up today at CARSTAR Hail-Otto, drawing a steady crowd and raising $715 in support of the St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation.

“It was fantastic,” said Lori Gervais, executive director of the foundation. “It’s always great to have community support and see people come out and come for some great BBQ, but also to support the MRI.”

In addition to the BBQ, the foundation also held its annual e-bike raffle draw at the event.

ECS grads celebrated and receive well wishes at ceremony event

The Estevan Comprehensive School (ECS) held its graduation ceremony over the weekend, celebrating the accomplishments of the Grade 12 students who are moving on to the next stage of their lives. That included a cap-and-gown ceremony at Affinity Place, along with a community parade.
