With the heat wave that's been lingering in the southeast the past few days, running down this dock and jumping into the lake would be a great way to cool off. For whatever reason it took me several minutes to decide how to compose this shot. I wanted the viewer to see the long runway in order to obtain a good speed before launching themselves into the water. This photo was taken in Riding Mountain National Park in Manitoba.

When the CWE Cruel Summer Tour stopped in Weyburn Thursday night, the fans who came out to the Weyburn Legion not only got to see a few hours of top-notch professional wrestling, but they also got the chance to witness history. In the third match of the card, the first-ever Souris Valley Wrestling Heavyweight Champion was crowned, as 'The Endseeker' Dante Leon pinned 'Chizzeled' Chad Daniels for the victory. 

Racquets ready! Southeast district tennis team prepares for the Summer Games

The Saskatchewan Summer Games are just a little over a week away, and the Southeast District tennis team is hard at work preparing for the games.

Manager of the SE team, Kalia Jutras, said Coach Arnold Betzema and the team have been working hard.

“We’ve had lots of practices, and the kids have been working hard. We’ve been lucky to have Coach coming down from Regina as well with Tennis Saskatchewan,” said Jutras.

“I think that the kids are all working together and working hard to get better and learn something new,” she added.

 

SPSA gives outlook on wildfire season with 75 active wildfires currently raging

With wildfire season going strong on the prairies, southeast residents already got a taste of smoke at the start of the week, and the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) is looking to keep fires down in the province.

Currently, there are 75 active wildfires in Saskatchewan. 12 of those are contained with 36 of those under assessment.

10 of the wildfires have direct property protection underway, and 17 of those are not yet contained.

Southeast crops enjoying hot weather with growing season underway

While heat coming down this week might remind people of the droughts over the past couple of years that impacted the southeast, farmers are actually thankful for a bit of heat.

While rainfall was below average in July, cooler temperatures through the spring along with a good helping of rain helped that moisture to stay in the ground where it's needed.

Combined Traffic Services assessed excessive speeding, impaired driving in Estevan throughout the week

Speeding offences didn't slow down during the heat wave. 

The Combined Traffic Services unit within the Estevan Police Service saw a handful of excessive speeding and impaired driving within city limits throughout the week, according to police reports. 

'Justice was served': Killer of 4 women in Winnipeg guilty of first-degree murder

Cheers erupted in a Winnipeg courtroom, spilling out onto downtown streets Thursday, as family members who lost their loved ones at the hands of a serial killer said they had finally received justice.

A judge convicted Jeremy Skibicki of first-degree murder in the 2022 slayings of four women in a case that put another bright spotlight on the issue of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls in Canada.

Jorden Myran, whose sister Marcedes Myran was killed, said she held back tears when the judge delivered the verdict.

Court to hear Saskatchewan's case to stop collection of carbon levy money

Federal Court in Vancouver is to hear a case today from the Saskatchewan government asking for an injunction to stop the Canada Revenue Agency from collecting millions in carbon levy money.

Premier Scott Moe's government argues it's unconstitutional for Ottawa to take from its bank account, and that it's unfair for Saskatchewan to pay.

Earlier this year, Saskatchewan had stopped remitting the carbon levy on natural gas to Ottawa, after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau exempted home-heating oil users from paying. 

JBS Foods Canada is expanding its beef processing facility at Brooks. 

Work is already underway on a new beef processing line and warehouse expansion.

The $90 million investment includes a new patty processing line and a state-of-the-art fulfillment centre, that is expected to be completed for the fall of 2025.

With the expansion, JBS Canada will produce almost seven million more kilograms of beef patties every year for restaurants in Western Canada.

Premier Danielle Smith says JBS is a cornerstone in Brooks, creating jobs and ensuring Alberta’s world-renowned beef makes it to the millions who love to eat it.

City of Estevan urges residents to make sure they're safe with heatwave continuing

With another day of extreme heat for the southeast on the schedule residents are reminded to keep cool however they can.

City Safety Coordinator Helen Fornwald says that the city's plan that they put forward for heat responses is something most people should follow.

She describes some of the steps people should take during hot weather.
