“Canadians have spoken, and I would take this opportunity to congratulate Prime Minister Mark Carney on his election win. Canadians have provided him and your party and your government a new mandate,” Premier Scott Moe said during his post-election press conference yesterday. 

Estevan is known for its strong sense of community, and that is largely thanks to the dedication of its volunteers. As National Volunteer Week continues until May 4, residents and organizations are taking the opportunity to recognize the countless individuals who give their time and effort to support local events and initiatives.

A group trying to make a case for electoral reform by creating very long ballots is declaring victory in this week's election — even as critics accuse it of indulging in stunts that undermine democracy.

"It's been a success," said Mark Moutter, one of dozens of protest candidates who ran in the Ottawa riding of Carleton.

"I've never seen people looking more optimistically at electoral reform, ever."

Manitoba Agriculture has released its first crop report of the season, providing valuable insights into the current state of seeding and livestock activities across the province.

Oilseed Specialist Sonya Wilson says seeding is just getting underway, with provincial seeding progress at approximately three per cent. This is ahead of the five-year average of one per cent. Farmers are currently planting spring wheat, peas, and a small amount of oats, particularly in areas west of Brandon and near Rapid City, with some activity in other regions as well.

With broken hearts the family wishes to announce that our precious daughter, sister, and granddaughter Sidney Jones, late of Carlyle, SK passed away on Friday, April 18, 2025 at the age of 20 years. Sidney will forever be loved and missed by so many.
A Celebration of Sidney’s Life will be held on Saturday, May 3, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. at the Carlyle United Church, Carlyle, SK with Sandy Dalziel officiating. The luncheon will follow the service at the Carlyle Sports Arena.

Estevan police dealt with a string of calls to start the week, including public intoxication, domestic disputes, and an arrest that led to an officer being assaulted.

Officers were called to a hotel for a report of a guest who refused to leave after checkout. Upon investigation, police learned the man was under conditions to have no contact with a woman staying in the same room. He was arrested for breaching those conditions.

Voters were out in force on Monday in Estevan, voting for their values by selecting which candidate they wanted to represent them. The election saw the second-highest number of votes on record, with 41,294 ballots cast, just shy of the record 41,550 in the 2019 federal election.

"I think the federal government hasn't been focusing enough on ensuring Trans rights in Canada. So that's the focus that I'd like."

With the federal election bringing both a new MP for Souris–Moose Mountain and another Liberal minority government in Ottawa, the Estevan Chamber of Commerce is calling for stronger collaboration, attention to Western priorities, and a renewed focus on trade and economic resilience.

Stephen Bonk was elected as the new Member of Parliament for the riding following Monday night’s vote. Chamber executive director Merissa Scarlett said she is optimistic about working with Bonk and believes his experience in trade will benefit the region.
