Refusal of breath test leads to significant penalties for Estevan driver

On Tuesday night, an Estevan woman was arrested after being caught driving 154 km/h in a 100 km/h zone. The incident occurred on Highway 39 between Hitchcock and Macoun.

Following a failed roadside breath test, she was taken to the station, where she refused to provide further breath samples.

14 rural doctors to work in Saskatchewan recruited under SIPPA program

The province has recruited 14 new doctors who will be practicing in rural areas after completing the Saskatchewan International Physician Practice Assessment. (SIPPA)

Those doctors completed the SIPPA back in May, and are now starting in a variety of communities.

In the southeast, two doctors are coming to Estevan, with Norma Makram Aziz Abdelnour and Azadeh Fazel both practicing in the city.

As well, Carlyle will see Behzad Khorvash begin practice in town thanks to the program with Funmilola Abosede Ogundipe working in Kipling.

CGC revokes grain licence for Purely Canada Foods Corp

Farmers owed money for unpaid deliveries to Purely Canada Foods Corp. are encouraged to contact the Canadian Grain Commission immediately.

The CGC revoked the grain dealer licence and primary elevator licences for Purely Canada Foods Corp. in Avonlea,  Kindersley, and Lajord, Saskatchewan as of 11:59 pm last night (August 27).

The company may owe grain farmers in Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Alberta money for grain deliveries.

Inflation not leading to huge increase in school supply cost

With students heading back to school in the coming weeks parents are looking at the costs of new school supplies and how that will affect their wallet.

Inflation has caused a number of items to rise in price over the last few years with school supplies also being affected.

Paul Martin, a business commentator, says that back-to-school costs may not be much higher than most other inflationary prices.

Motorcycle fire and high-speed arrest mark busy night for Estevan Police

Estevan Police Service had a busy Tuesday, responding to multiple incidents across the city, including a motorcycle fire that left the vehicle damaged, a high-speed arrest leading to serious charges, and a suspicious vehicle report that kept officers on alert.

Early Tuesday evening, police assisted Estevan Fire and Rescue with a vehicle fire on the east side of the city. A motorcycle caught fire while in operation and sustained extensive damage. No injuries were reported.

Sharp rise in whooping cough cases reported in several provinces

Whooping cough cases are on the rise in Canada, with some provinces reporting sharp increases compared to pre-pandemic averages. 

More than 11,670 cases have been reported in Quebec so far this year, a significant jump from the annual average of 562 cases between 2015 and 2019. 

The majority of whooping cough patients are between the ages of 10 and 14, a spokesperson for Quebec's health ministry said in an email to The Canadian Press.

The last peak of whooping cough activity in the province was in 2019, when 1,269 cases were reported, the email said.

Vote on $47.8B First Nations child welfare deal delayed due to chiefs' concerns

 

The Assembly of First Nations has postponed a special assembly for chiefs to vote on a landmark child welfare reform deal with Canada due to concerns about the process and a late translation of the document to French.

The Assembly was scheduled to be held in September in Winnipeg, but it will not happen now until October or November, the AFN said Tuesday.
