EPYC's Friday festivities: BBQ fundraiser and family night

The Estevan Public Youth Centre (EPYC) is gearing up for a busy and exciting Friday, with two key events aimed at supporting the community and engaging local families.

The day kicks off with a fundraiser BBQ hosted by the Southern Plains Co-op from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in their grocery store parking lot. For $6, attendees can enjoy a hamburger or hot dog with a cold drink, with all proceeds benefiting EPYC.

Lend a hand: EMF work bee aims to prep fields for football season

Estevan Minor Football is calling for volunteers to participate in a work bee this weekend as they prepare for the upcoming football season.

Pat Ford with EMF said the work will take place at the Woodlawn Game Fields on Sunday, August 25, focusing on painting the locker rooms, painting the bleachers, and completing other minor projects.

He noted that around 10 to 20 volunteers would be ideal, but any number of volunteers is welcome.

Paul’s family is saddened to announce his passing at the Redvers Health Centre Long Term Care Facility, Redvers, Sask. on August 18, 2024 at the age of 92.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, August 22, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Redvers, with Rev. Lourdhu Raju Bandhanadam the Celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Regis Parish Cemetery, Wauchope, after which a luncheon will be held at Our Lady of Fatima Church in the hall.

Estevan Bruins hockey camp helps youth players get started before the puck drops

The Estevan Bruins are hosting a camp for youth players hoping to hone their skills before the hockey season begins.

Those camps feature age groups between U7 and U15, with the U9 to U13 groups practicing this week.

Marty Martinson, the play-by-play voice and marketing operations director for the Bruins, says the camp has been going great since their first week.

Strained RCMP resources mean a 'delicate balance' on protecting MPs: internal memo

The demands of protecting parliamentarians and other public figures are placing "significant strain" on RCMP personnel and taking resources from other federal policing priorities, warns an internal briefing note. 

The national police force is "forced to walk a delicate balance" in providing protective services in response to threats flagged by parliamentarians, says the newly released February memo.

"The limited capacity of the RCMP's protective services must be prioritized based on these assessments."

Ministry of Environment looking for hunter's help in managing disease

Saskatchewan's Ministry of Environment is looking for the help of hunters from around the province to make sure wild animal populations are healthy and disease-free.

Bovine Tuberculosis (Bovine TB) was found in a cattle herd back in 2023 and now the province is hoping hunters can keep an eye out for any cases in wildlife.

Monday's supermoon was the first of four this year.

During a supermoon, the full moon inches a little closer than usual to Earth. A supermoon isn't bigger, but it can appear that way in the night sky, although scientists say the difference can be barely perceptible.

September's supermoon will coincide with a partial lunar eclipse. October's will be the year's closest approach, and November's will round out the year.

City manager outlines budget revisions for Downtown Revitalization Project

At the latest council meeting City Manager Jeff Ward revealed that costs for the downtown revitalization project have exceeded the budget, prompting adjustments to be made to the scope of the project. 

“We’ve got the final pricing in for some of our electrical and furnishing items. Unfortunately, these are a little above what we have planned for this year,” said Ward.

The Canadian Beef Conference is underway

The Canadian Beef Industry Conference is being held this week in Saskatoon for the first time.

The four-day event brings together 500 attendees from cattle producers, to government agencies, beef industry representatives and researchers from across the country to share ideas.

Vice President of the Canadian Cattle Association Tyler Fulton says its an opportunity for participants to hear from some keynote speakers and take part in the CCA committee meetings.
