Jailed chicken farmer found to be in compliance for number of laying hens
Southern Alberta farmer has long-standing issues with supply-management system for smaller egg producers like himself.
A southern Alberta egg producer who had been jailed for missing a court date for violating the provincial laws governing egg production has passed a premises inspection by Egg Farmers of Alberta.
Henk Van Essen said an inspector only spent a few minutes inside his operation before coming back out and telling him he was in full compliance.
“They were so sure they were going to find thousands of chickens in this barn,” Van Essen said.

Darlene Bull passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 30, 2025 in Estevan, Saskatchewan at the age of 73 years. Born on November 16, 1951, in Fort Qu’ Appelle, Saskatchewan. Darlene was a loving and devoted mother, a loyal friend and a kind-hearted soul whose warmth touched everyone she met.
A private family memorial will take place on July 4, 2025 at Lipton Memorial Garden.
Estevan streets being closed as work gets underway
The City of Estevan is announcing some new construction work taking place on the city's roads.
Beginning today, the 1200 block of 2nd Street, between 12th Avenue and 13th Avenue, will be closed for sewer replacement. This includes the closure of the north sidewalk. That closure will remain in place until construction is complete.
Tomorrow, the intersection of 4th Street and 13th Avenue will also be closed in both directions for approximately 2 days to allow for electrical work as part of the Downtown Revitalization Project.
A moment of celebration
May marks the 80th Anniversary of Victory in Europe Day when the Second World War came to an end in Europe. The Estevan Royal Canadian Legion will commemorate VE Day on Thursday, May 8th with a free will donation BBQ from 11-2 in front of the Legion Clubroom.
Lunch will include hamburgers, hotdogs, pop and water.
It's an opportunity for our community to come together and enjoy some great food and take a tour of the Estevan Legion and its museum.
Update: Service restored for RCMP detachment phone services
As of 11:43 a.m., the Saskatchewan RCMP is reporting that all phone services have been restored for detachments around the province.
The Saskatchewan RCMP is sending out a notice to communities that their telephone services in detachments are currently experiencing issues.
Emergency services through 911 are not affected. When a person calls the RCMP Detachment phone number, they may hear a busy signal.
As the situation continues, the RCMP advises people to call 911 in an emergency and to call 310-RCMP to report non-emergency situations.
Medical Health Officer stresses vaccination after measles exposure in Weyburn
The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) issued a public notice on Saturday about a potential measles exposure in Weyburn. Anyone who was at Walmart in Weyburn on April 17 between 3:45 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. is advised to monitor for symptoms of measles for 21 days following the potential exposure.
Dr. Stanley Enebeli is the Medical Health Officer for Weyburn and Estevan. He says they are investigating the outbreak and believe this is an imported case, as the cases come from the same household, with a recent history of travel to the United States.
Oxbow steps up: Citizens on Patrol group draws strong interest
A new Citizens on Patrol group is forming in Oxbow, with the aim of increasing community safety and supporting local RCMP.
Tara Allen, who is spearheading the initiative, said the idea came after she was approached by a member of the community familiar with the success of a similar program in Alida.
“They asked if I’d be willing to get it started here, and we felt it would be a benefit to the community,” Allen said.
