Local wins bronze medal at national pickleball championships

Wymark's Sally Wiens made the most of a last-minute pickleball partnership on the national stage.

An injury to Janet Simpson's normal partner opened the door for Wiens to compete at Winnipeg's 2025 Myoflex National Championship, with the newly formed pair winning bronze on Saturday in the women's doubles 65 and above age category..

"We hadn't really ever played together before, and I think we got three hours of play time before nationals," she said. "We struggled initially but found a way to get to the medal round."

City advises of four-day overpass work

The City of Swift Current has advised residents of a significant sidewalk closure in downtown Swift Current set to begin on Tuesday morning.

The pedestrian sidewalk on the Second Avenue Overpass will be closed between 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. from Tuesday to Friday this week, allowing work to be done inside the concrete abutments. 
A walking detour is available from Third Avenue North East onto North Railway Street, then along South Railway Street and onto Third Avenue South East. 

Tax agency extends contracts of 850 call centre workers amid staffing concerns

The Canada Revenue Agency has offered contract extensions to around 850 call centre employees as their union sounds the alarm over staffing levels. 

CRA spokesperson Etienne Biram says the workers, whose contracts were set to expire in September, were contacted about the decision last week.

The federal union representing workers at the tax agency recently launched an online campaign denouncing staffing cuts. 

LeBlanc set to meet Lutnick in Washington after Ottawa drops some tariffs

Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc is set to meet with U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick in Washington this week after Ottawa announced it would be lifting some retaliatory tariffs.

LeBlanc's office said he will travel to the United States capital on Tuesday.

Prime Minister Mark Carney announced last Friday that Canada will drop some retaliatory tariffs on U.S. products to match American tariff exemptions for goods covered under the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement on trade, called CUSMA. .

Northern system bringing warm weather to southwest

August will close with some warmer-than-usual weather in the southwest over the last stretch of the month.

"A really warm ridge of high pressure basically building in through parts of northern Alberta, northern Saskatchewan, the Northwest Territories, Yukon, British Columbia," said Crawford Luke, meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada. "It's really just kind of centered around that 60th parallel. It just looks like it's going to expand to include all of western Canada over the next week to ten days or so."

Trevor was born in Eston on January 15th, 1972, as the youngest of 7 to Angeline (Metlewsky) and Bernard Fleischfresser on Bernard's 49th birthday.

Trevor was raised on the farm by Isham, Saskatchewan and graduated from Eston High School in 1990.

Trevor moved to Saskatoon to attend the University of Saskatchewan College of Agriculture. Trevor was recruited to the U of S Huskies Football team where he played nose tackle. His family often said he took 6 years to complete his 4-year degree to support his football obsession.

Fire hydrant replacement on North Railway West

Motorists may have to plan an alternate route if their commute takes them along North Railway Street West on Tuesday.

According to a news release from the City of Swift Current, a fire hydrant is being replaced on the westbound lane of North Railway Street West between 11th Avenue NW and 8th Avenue NW.

There is no estimate as to when the repairs will be completed.

Motorists are advised to expect delays in the area.

Saskatchewan finalizes trade mission to Asia


The dates are set Premier Scott Moe's trade mission to Asia runs September 6th to 12th.

It's a very important region for the province ... In 2024, Saskatchewan exported over $10 billion to Asia—$4.4 billion to China, $929 million to Japan and 162 million to South Korea.

The goal is to reinforce future trade opportunities and engage with China on their temporary duties on peas and canola.

The Premier has invited Prime Minister Mark Carney and any other federal ministers  to join the trade mission.
