Poilievre promises tougher ethics rules, takes aim at Carney's assets

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is promising to tighten financial transparency rules for elected officials — and is using that promise to take aim at Liberal Leader Mark Carney.

Poilievre told a press conference in Ottawa on Sunday that if his party forms government, he'll ban what he calls "shadow lobbying."

Poilievre pledges veterans' supports; Carney offers cheaper access to parks, museums

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre promised to cut red tape and step up support for veterans Saturday, while Liberal Leader Mark Carney pledged to make visiting national parks and museums more affordable for Canadian families.

Poilievre unveiled his party's plan for veterans during a press conference in Nepean, the suburban Ottawa community that contains the neighbouring ridings where he and Carney are running. 

Carney did not have any public events scheduled. NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh's itinerary shows he will hold an evening event in Timmins, Ont.

Delacour Crossing to bring premium housing, and year-round amenities to area

A new residential and recreational community is coming to the Hamlet of Delacour.

Delacour Development Corp. acquired 315 acres of development land which will be called Delacour Crossing.

According to Statistics Canada, Delacour had a population of just five people in 2021.

According to the organization, there will be 480 premium home sites with 50- to 65-foot-wide lots, green spaces, a connected pathway system, and communal parks, along with an amenity village for recreation, events, and social gatherings.

Hussar Agricultural Society aims to revitalize arena with $25K prize

The Hussar Agricultural Society is asking for community support to help upgrade its local arena.

Three community members submitted letters to the Growing Home contest, hosted by BAS, highlighting the need to beautify the facility.

The organization is one of three communities competing to win the top prize of $25,000.

According to society staff, the arena plays a major role in the community by hosting local hockey, ringette, and community events.

Standard and Beiseker departments highlight critical role of volunteer fire crews

Many communities across southern Alberta rely on volunteer firefighters — including the villages of Standard and Beiseker.

Standard Fire Chief Mark Duguay says the organization has 13 members who respond to calls across Wheatland County.

"There's structure fires, there's grass fires, wildland fires — whatever we're called to. Medicals, whatever they need us to go out to, we go out to."

Alberta Law Foundation board members quit over bill giving minister power on grants

Two of the Alberta Law Foundation's provincially appointed board members have resigned in protest over proposed legislation that they say amounts to political interference in how vulnerable people access the justice system.

The bill would give Justice Minister Mickey Amery final say on grants over $250,000 that the foundation provides to community legal clinics and researchers.

The foundation says it funds about 65 non-profit service providers every year through interest earned on lawyers' trust accounts, not government coffers.

Strathmore's Eagle Heights Development resumes following appeal from developers

The Eagle Heights Development received the green light to resume after the development permit was cancelled earlier this year.

At a hearing on March 27, Broadstreet Properties appealed the cancellation of their development permit. Following the hearing, the Subdivision and Development Appeal Board granted the appeal, allowing the original development permit to stand as issued.

Grease production to hit the stage at Chestermere High School

Students at Chestermere High School's fine arts academy are in the final stretch of rehearsing for their annual spring musical.

A production of Grease will be coming to the city in late May, with students from all across the school helping with the production.

"With my class, they're responsible for doing all of the stage acting, and I let the students orchestrate their own choreography as well," said drama teacher Christine Fulthorpe.

Skatemore Girls flips its way into first meeting of the year

Now that the snow is gone, Skatemore Girls has resumed weekly meetings at the Strathmore Skatepark.

The group held its first meeting on Thursday, Apr. 10.

"It's so exciting. It feels so good," said founder Becca McDonald. "I definitely missed the community over the winter."

At each gathering the group supplies residents with skateboards, snacks, and safety equipment, alongside a Bluetooth speaker and karaoke. 

"I try to bring a hula hoop and craft stuff, so they don't even need to come and skate. They can just hang out."
