International chainsaw sculptors to craft masterpieces in upcoming Drumheller event
When you think of Drumheller, the things that spring to mind are dinosaurs, badlands, and desert area.
However, the valley is also known for its massive cottonwoods.
The town embarked on a flood mitigation process that saw many of the trees cut down.
"We questioned them and basically the wood was just going to be used for firewood and mulch, so we knew we had to do better by those trees," said Tony Miglecz, an organizer of the event.
Chestermere groups working to create a safer community for young people
The City of Chestermere recently connected important voices from across the community.
The Youth Safety Workshop was hosted by Chestermere Synergy on Friday, Feb. 14.
"This event brought together key voices from across our community to discuss ways to enhance the safety and well-being of youth in our city," mentioned the city in a news release.
Freedom Convoy organizer Pat King given 3-month conditional sentence
Freedom Convoy organizer Pat King was sentenced to three months of house arrest in an Ottawa court this morning.
The sentence includes 100 hours of community service at a food bank or men's shelter.
It comes on top of nine months he spent in custody both before and during his trial.
King was found guilty on five of nine charges in November, including mischief and disobeying a court order, for his role in the 2022 protest that took over downtown Ottawa for three weeks.
RCMP find woman after reported identity fraud at bank
Three Hills RCMP have identified a woman involved in an earlier identity fraud investigation.
The news comes after she went to a Three Hills ATB and gave the bank teller a fake Alberta Driver's license.
The woman tried to deposit a cheque into an account through an account holder's name.
The bank teller did not give the woman any funds from the bank after noticing it was not a real driver's license.
Three arrested for several break and enters in Rocky View County
Three people have been arrested for a series of break and enters in the Rocky View County area.
Earlier this month, Alberta RCMP and Calgary police investigated a series of break ins throughout Calgary and six separate RCMP jurisdictions.
According to police, the suspects broke into autobody shops and dealerships, stealing vehicles and their keys. In total, 18 vehicles were stolen, and 15 were recovered.
Strathmore trick rider Gracie Piper conquers snow and nerves at Skijordue event
It was a special moment for a Strathmore trick rider over the weekend.
Gracie Piper said the crowds at a recent Skijordue event in Calgary put her skills to the test. She performed at the Calgary Confluence Historic Site from Feb. 15-16 as a part of the Skijor Canada festivities.
"I was nervous, and I got out there and that crowd was huge, and they were super loud and that just made me feel so much better."
According to Horse Canada, skijoring features riders on galloping horses who tow skiers or snowboarders towards a ramp for incredible aerial moves.
With tariffs looming, NFU calls for stronger domestic food production
National Farmers Union (NFU) president Jenn Pfenning says Canadian farmers need greater support for domestic food production as uncertainty over tariffs continues to disrupt trade.
"We in Canada have focused a lot of our efforts in agriculture around export markets. Successive governments have pushed Canadian farmers to scale up to meet export demand, largely outside our borders."
That focus, she says, has increased reliance on imported food, leaving the country vulnerable to supply chain disruptions.
Crown seeking 10-year sentence for Freedom Convoy organizer Pat King
Pat King, one of the organizers of the 2022 convoy protest in Ottawa, is set to be sentenced in an Ottawa courtroom today.
Superior Court Justice Charles Hackland found King guilty on five counts in November, including mischief and disobeying a court order.
King was found not guilty on three counts of intimidation and one count of obstructing police.
The Crown is seeking a sentence of 10 years for King — the maximum penalty.
Investigation into plane crash at Pearson airport continues as black box recovered
Delays at Toronto's Pearson airport may continue today as investigators work to determine what caused Monday's fiery crash landing of a Delta Air Lines plane with 80 people on board.
Investigators with the Transportation Safety Board of Canada said Tuesday they've recovered the plane's black box and sent it off for analysis, but it's too soon to say what led to the crash.
Airport authorities said the wreckage of the aircraft was expected to remain on the runway for about 48 hours until the investigators finish their work.
