Investigation into plane crash at Pearson airport continues as black box recovered
Delays at Toronto's Pearson airport may continue today as investigators work to determine what caused Monday's fiery crash landing of a Delta Air Lines plane with 80 people on board.
Investigators with the Transportation Safety Board of Canada said Tuesday they've recovered the plane's black box and sent it off for analysis, but it's too soon to say what led to the crash.
Airport authorities said the wreckage of the aircraft was expected to remain on the runway for about 48 hours until the investigators finish their work.

Sudden watermain break reported in Strathmore
A watermain break was reported in Strathmore at several locations around town.
According to the town, the break is in the following areas:
- Fifth Avenue
- Second Street
- Briarwood Crescent
- Briarwood Road
"Crews are already on-site and working to resolve the issue. If possible, please avoid these roads to give them space to work safely," wrote the town.
An update will be issued once the roads are cleared of crews.
Residence near Strathmore closed by AHS due to health violations
Alberta Health Services (AHS) has shut down a home near Strathmore after an investigation discovered rodent droppings, no heat, and no running water.
The home, located at 4300-4400 Township Road 244, was deemed unfit for tenants, and all renters were ordered to vacate before Jan. 25.
According to AHS, the home had no running water along with a broken furnace, which left the home without heat. Inspectors also discovered exposed wiring, no smoke alarms, and damaged windows.
Agra Risk Wheatland Kings offering free admission to students for playoff games
It's almost playoff time for the Agra Risk Wheatland Kings and that means fans will be flooding the Strathmore Family Centre Arena this weekend.
The Kings will battle the Medicine Hat Cubs in the first game of five on Saturday, Feb 22 at 8 p.m.
The Strathmore-based team is offering free entry to all their playoff games to students.
General Manager for the Kings, Cody Holdaway said they came up with the idea to support youth in the community.
Province announces funding for new K-9 school in Chestermere
Chestermere has received funding for a new K-9 school.
The Alberta government made the announcement on Saturday, Feb. 15 as part of a $2.1 billion deal for 11 new schools to be built in the greater Calgary region.
Strathmore bird advocacy group reacts to Eagle Heights development cancellation
The Strathmore Bird Sanctuary Initiative has given its thoughts on the recent cancellation of the Eagle Heights development.
The development was cancelled by the Town of Strathmore on Thursday, Feb. 13 following a review of the file. Just a week before the cancellation, the initiative presented to town council asking them to cancel the project.
Police looking for woman involved in attempted bank fraud in nearby community
Police are looking for a woman who is said to be involved in identity fraud.
"On Dec. 10, 2024, an unidentified female attended the ATB bank in Three Hills. She provided the bank teller with a fake Alberta driver’s license in an account holder's name and attempted to deposit a cheque. The bank teller recognized that the driver’s license was not authentic and prevented the release of funds," mentioned an RCMP news release.
According to police, they're asking the public for help to find her.
Inflation ticks back up to 1.9% in January after rise in gas prices
Canada's annual inflation rate ticked back up in January to 1.9 per cent, Statistics Canada reported on Tuesday.
Prices got a full month-long effect of the federal government’s tax break but a spike in gas prices to start the year offset the government’s relief, with underlying inflation accelerating.
The agency reported prices at the pump jumped 8.6 per cent year-over-year, in large part because of a 25.9 per cent spike in Manitoba, with the province reintroducing its provincial gas tax after a temporary suspension through 2024.
Brooks RCMP pull over suspicious truck, confiscate thousands of cigarette cartons
Brooks RCMP recently confiscated a large number of cigarette cartons on their way to Alberta.
On Thursday, Feb. 13 police were called to a local businesses following reports of a suspicious truck in the area.
An RCMP new release said officers seized over 36,000 cartons of cigarettes when they stopped the vehicle.
Two people were arrested and released without charges. The investigation is ongoing.
