Here's what you need to know as extreme wind chills expected to hit Strathmore

Extreme wind chills are expected in Wheatland County near Strathmore, Lyalta, and Carseland.

"Extremely cold wind chill values between minus 40 and minus 45 are expected to develop overnight tonight," mentioned a news release from Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC).

According to ECCC, children, adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working outside and anyone without proper shelter are more susceptible to the extreme cold.

On Saturday (Feb. 8), the Strathmore Civic Centre was filled with dozens of dogs for the sixth annual FurFest.

Hosted by Alpine View Pet Spa, the event was a dog-themed fair that featured an off-leash play area, local vendors, and adoptable dogs. 

"It's been really busy, which is awesome," said Alpine View owner Kyla Janes shortly into the event. "We've had tons of dogs coming through, and we've got goody bags for them all."

Premier Smith says she was "not involved in any wrongdoing" with AHS allegations

Allegations have recently surfaced against officials in Premier Smith's government, which has prompted an investigation by Alberta's auditor general.

The investigation is into the procurement practices in the health ministry after it had been reported that there was government interference in the procurement processes. 

Chestermere staff skate for a cause, raising nearly $5,000 for the United Way

It was a successful past week of hockey for staff with the City of Chestermere.

Participants took part in a 3-on-3 tournament to help fundraise for the United Way from Feb. 5-6.

"Representatives from City Hall, Community Operations, and Community Safety participated and successfully raised a total of $4,764. Thanks to all our staff who participated and to the families who came out to support, and to Mayor Dean who acted as referee," added the city in a news release.

Staff with the city said they're grateful to be able to give back to the community.

Singer-songwriter Buffy Sainte-Marie stripped of Order of Canada

The appointment of singer-songwriter Buffy Sainte-Marie to the Order of Canada has been terminated by the Governor General.

The move was announced in the Canada Gazette, the federal government newspaper.

It says the appointment was terminated by an ordinance signed by Gov. Gen. Mary Simon on Jan. 3.

The move comes after a CBC report in 2023 questioned Sainte-Marie's Indigenous heritage, saying it found a birth certificate that indicated she was born in 1941 in Massachusetts.
