Scott Silva to discuss Lakewood of Strathmore developments

Scott Silva from Lakewood of Strathmore will be joining the 104.5 More Country morning show next week on Tuesday morning (Feb. 4).

We'll be chatting about the history of Lakewood along with past and upcoming events that the group will host. 

Silva will also provide an update on the current lake construction.

Police crack down on drone-facilitated drug trafficking into Drumheller prison

RCMP has charged three people following a year-long drug trafficking investigation.

According to police, in November of 2023, staff at the Correctional Service of Canada in Drumheller told RCMP that they found a package with methamphetamine, cell phones, fentanyl, and nicotine patches.

RCMP were able to find a drone near the prison that they believe was used to smuggle drugs in.

Fog advisory issued near Chestermere

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued a fog advisory for Rocky View County. 

According to the group, areas of dense fog have developed around Calgary, including near Chestermere, Dalroy, and Dalemead.

"Low visibility in fog will continue through the morning," wrote ECCC. "Conditions are expected to improve later this afternoon."

Travel is expected to be hazardous as some areas bring near-zero visibility.

Although the fog has also appeared in Strathmore, a fog advisory was not issued for the area.

Liberal ministers make last-ditch pitch in D.C. to stop Trump tariffs on Canada

A trio of federal cabinet ministers is in Washington today making a last-ditch attempt to stop U.S. President Donald Trump from imposing economically devastating tariffs on Canadian imports.

Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly, Public Safety Minister David McGuinty and Immigration Minister Marc Miller are all in the U.S. capital, making a final diplomatic push to convince Republican lawmakers and Trump's team to sway the president.

Trump has signalled he's prepared to slap 25 per cent tariffs on Canadian imports as early as Saturday.

Jaime Battiste drops out of running for Liberal leadership

Nova Scotia Liberal MP Jaime Battiste says he is dropping out of the Liberal party leadership race and backing former central banker Mark Carney.

The MP for Sydney—Victoria made the announcement in a statement sent out late Thursday by his campaign.

Battiste was the only Indigenous candidate in the running and sought to put First Nations issues on the agenda during the contest.

He says the best way for him to advance the issues he cares about — reconciliation, the environment and affordability — is by supporting Carney’s leadership bid.

CWRC commits $11.8 million over five years to the CDC

Earlier this week, the Canadian Wheat Research Coalition (CWRC), announced they’ve committed $11.8 million of funding over the next five years to the University of Saskatchewan’s Crop Development Centre (CDC). With the CWRC’s previous funding agreement with the CDC expiring this year, CWRC’s president Lori-Ann Kaminski knew that this was a deal that needed to be done. 

Here's what you need to know about the reopening of the outdoor rink in Strathmore

Strathmore residents should sharpen their skates as the outdoor skating rink is reopening to the public on Thursday.

According to the town, the rink had to be closed earlier this week as warm temperatures wreaked havoc on the ice surfaces.

StrathmoreNow will provide residents with additional updates if the rink closes again due to the weather.

What is Rocky View Schools doing to recover from a recent data breach?

Rocky View Schools (RVS) is continuing to respond to a data breach involving its PowerSchool platform.

In a statement released on Tuesday (Jan. 28), RVS expressed gratitude for the community's patience as it works to resolve the issue. 

"Since learning of the breach on Jan. 7, we have been working with PowerSchool and doing our own internal investigation to determine which students and staff have been impacted."

Chestermere dishes out funding for senior programs

Senior programs in Chestermere have received additional funding for the upcoming year.

According to a news release from the city, a total of $28,000 has been allocated to two grant programs including $16,000 to the Chestermere Senior All Services for connections for South Asian seniors along with the Chestermere Whitecappers Association for senior fitness programs.

The Community Grant funding was approved by members of City Council during a meeting on Tuesday (Jan. 28).
