Agra Risk Wheatland Kings clinch playoff berth

The Agra Risk Wheatland Kings clinched a playoff berth on Tuesday (Jan 7) against the High River Flyers. 

The final score was 5-2 at the Bob Snodgrass Memorial Complex.

Cody Holdaway, general manager of the Kings, says the club is having the best season in franchise history.

The Kings are second in the division with a record of 22-5-1 with 45 points, two behind the leading Carstar Okotoks Bisons. 

"We're just a couple more wins away from clinching a bye in the play-in round."

Saskatchewan sees average year as province back to recovering from droughts

Saskatchewan continued on the path to recovery as another year saw conditions remain closer to normal following the droughts earlier this decade.

The ag sector is hoping to see more progress on that with a good snowpack over winter helping to balance that moisture deficit.

Liberal MPs gather for first time since Trudeau announced his resignation plans

Liberal MPs are meeting in Ottawa today for the first time since Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced he will step down.

The national caucus meeting, set to take place both in person and online, was originally set to last six hours to give MPs time to discuss Trudeau's previous refusal to resign.

Now, the focus will be on next steps for the party as it begins a national search for a leader who can hold their own against popular Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre.

Bow River MP Martin Shields has voiced his thoughts on Justin Trudeau announcing that he intends to resign.

The resignation was announced on Monday (Jan. 6) during a press conference, with Trudeau saying that he plans to step down as Prime Minister and as the leader of the Liberal Party.

However, Shields claims that a resignation is not what Canadians want.

Alberta government invests $500,000 towards children with disabilities in sport

The AMP Legacy Foundation of Canada has received $500,000 from the Alberta government to support children with disabilities in the sports they love. 

"AMP empowers children with physical disabilities by creating programs that foster physical activity in an inclusive environment," mentioned the province in a news release. 

"Their work includes running a program for Grade 3 students, supporting mixed-ability jamborees for adaptive and able-body athletes, and supporting the first Tier 1 NHL-affiliated sledge hockey team in Canadian history." 

Strathmore to host regional cornhole tournament in April

A big cornhole tournament is heading to Strathmore later this year.

Lance Smith, president of the Strathmore Huskers Cornhole Club says the event will be held on April 11-12 at the Curling Club.

"That helps you acquire points towards nationals which are in Edmonton this year."

According to Smith, the team will also be hosting provincials in July, and he mentioned it's easy to register.

"All you have to do is pay a Canada cornhole membership and you can play in these events."

Thousands raised for Strathmore Library through bottle drive

The Strathmore Municipal Library received thousands of dollars in recyclables during a bottle drive over the weekend.

The drive was held on Saturday, with library staff accepting drop-off donations while travelling around town picking up empties from residents. 

Board Chair Ann Horn said that around half of the bottles they received were through pick-up.

"We had the people that were staying at home because it was so cold," said Horn. "We also had people who put it on their calendar, and they were going to make sure that they made it over with their bottles."

The Strathmore Municipal Library wrapped up its bottle drive last weekend and raised over $2,000.

Ann Horn, chair of the Strathmore Municipal Library will join the 104.5 More Country morning show Wednesday at 7:40 a.m. to discuss the important initiative.

We'll also discuss some of the programs that the library is offering to the community.

Where can you drop off your used Christmas trees in Strathmore?

Residents are now able to get rid of their used natural Christmas trees.

According to the Town of Strathmore, collection will begin Monday (Jan. 13).

"The trees will be collected throughout the week. Don’t forget to remove all lights, ornaments, tinsel, garlands, nails, screws and tree stands. We wouldn't want parts of your ornaments mixed in with tree chippings and compost," added the town on its Facebook page.

The town says people can place their undecorated trees at their regular collection location by 7 a.m.
