Two men charged in shooting death near Strathmore to face trial together

The two men charged in the shooting death of a man near Strathmore on August 6 will be tried together when the case goes to trial.

Arthur Wayne Penner was arrested on August 12 by Edmonton police and is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Colin Hough, a Rocky View County employee. He is also charged with the attempted murder of another man.

Two Strathmore schools hit the right note: music programs receive $4,800

A total of $4,800 has been donated by Golden West Broadcasting to help fund the music programs at Strathmore High School and Crowther Memorial Junior High School.

Each school will receive $2,400.

Bryan Allsopp, the music teacher for both schools says the partnership dates back over five years.

According to Allsopp, in the past, the money has gone to funding items like percussion instruments. He says the schools have also put the money towards international trips.

Allsopp says this year's funds will go a long way.

Chestermere looking to take the bite out of winter with jacket donation program

As winter approaches, the City of Chestermere is looking to take the bite out of winter by providing winter clothing for those less fortunate.

Staff from the city are asking for warm jackets.

You can drop off your gently used or new coats for adults and children at City Hall, the Recreation Centre, the library, or Synergy as part of the Jacket Racket program.

"Every jacket makes a difference. Together, we can help keep our neighbours warm this winter," says a Facebook post from the city.

The jackets will be collected until the second last week of October.

NDP MP introduces bill to criminalize residential school denialism

An NDP MP has introduced a bill that would criminalize residential school denialism, saying it would help stop harm caused toward survivors, their families and communities.

If the bill is passed, people could be charged under the Criminal Code for promoting hatred against Indigenous Peoples by condoning, justifying or downplaying the historical and lasting impact of residential schools.

'Big Sam': Paleontologists unearth giant skull of Pachyrhinosaurus in Alberta

It's a dinosaur that roamed Alberta's badlands more than 70 million years ago, sporting a big, bumpy, bony head the size of a baby elephant.

On Wednesday, paleontologists near Grande Prairie pulled its 272-kilogram skull from the ground. 

They call it "Big Sam."

The adult Pachyrhinosaurus is the second plant-eating dinosaur to be unearthed from a dense bonebed belonging to a herd that died together on the edge of a valley that now sits 450 kilometres northwest of Edmonton.

It didn't die alone.

Foreign ministry rang alarm bell over challenges in countering disinformation online

Canada's foreign ministry expressed alarm about its shrinking ability to counter foreign disinformation online due to limited access to data and the evolving tactics of adversaries, a newly released memo shows. 

The memo, tabled Wednesday at a federal inquiry into foreign interference, noted Canada had led the G7 Rapid Response Mechanism to identify and respond to threats to democracy through open-source data analytics. 

Strathmore Spartans to host Willow Creek Cobras in search of first win

The Strathmore Spartans boys' football team is still searching for their first win of the season.

In the Spartans' previous game, they lost 33-13 against the Centennial Coyotes in Calgary.

"It was wet and rainy," said head coach Danny Warrack. "We were in it for a long time but couldn't get enough traction on offence."

Despite the loss, Warrack said that he believed it was their best game of the season, with an exceptional defensive performance.

Alberta government invests $1.5 million for rural lung screening procedures

The Alberta government and the Alberta Cancer Foundation have partnered with 19 to Zero to help bring mobile lung health units to rural communities across the province.

According to a news release, the screening program will receive $1.5 million to help increase early detection and treatment.

The funds will be matched by the Alberta Cancer Foundation.
