Canada’s agricultural sector faces mounting pressure as the country continues to lose farmland to urban development, while some existing acres sit vacant.

That’s according to new research released by the Canadian Agri-Food Policy Institute.

Strathmore roads closing due to reservoir upgrade

Consruction crews will be on the roads in Strathmore next week as part of a reservoir upgrade. 

The Town of Strathmore has notified residents that road closures will begin Monday (June 9) in the areas of Centennial Drive and Maplewood Drive. 

The construction is expected to go on throughout the week. Crews will be working to replace the watermain connection on Centennial Drive and upsize the watermain on Maplewood Drive. Improvements will also include expanding the pathways on the west side of Maplewood Drive. 

Canada may struggle to find markets for its peas

Canada will likely be facing more competition in pea export markets this year.

Russia’s production is expected to rebound after a disappointing 2024-25 harvest, said Gaurav Jain, analyst with AgPulse Analytica.

He is forecasting 5.01 million tonnes of production in 2025-26, up from 3.92 million tonnes last year.

Strathmore seniors enjoy live music and ice cream for Seniors' Week

Strathmore seniors got to celebrate Seniors' Week with ice cream and live music at the Lord of All Lutheran Church.

On Thursday (June 5) seniors met at the church, with the social put together by Wheatland Family & Community Support Services.

"When it first started, we were lucky to get two tables full," said Ethel Bertram, a local senior. "Just before the lockdowns, there were starting to be a few more. We'd get 30 or 40 people. Since they started up again, we're getting 80 to 90 people. It's usually full."

The federal government's grain monitor Quorum Corporation released its weekly performance update for Grain Week 42.

Space in primary elevators is good - as road bans remain in effect across the prairies, country stocks dropped to 2.34 million metric tonnes. 

Total Western Port terminal stocks increased to 1.52 MMT in Week 42, utilizing 79% of the working capacity.

West Coast unloads were 6,332 cars and 2,051 for Thunder Bay.

The total average terminal out-of-car time (OCT) increased to 15.2% from 6.0% the previous week.
