Envision seeks sponsors for inaugural 'Par for a Purpose' golf tournament

Envision Counselling and Support Centre announced the launch of their first annual Par for a Purpose Mental Health & Wellness Golf Tournament. The event is taking over the legacy of the long-standing Weyburn Travelodge Hotel Charity Golf Tournament which raised more than $400,000 for non-profit charities across southeast Saskatchewan in its 20 years.

Moose Mountain Provincial Park to see backcountry sites, Chalet upgrades

The provincial budget, announced on March 19th, plans for some upgrades and developments at Moose Mountain Provincial Park. The park will soon feature back country camping sites as well as upgrades to the Visitor Centre.

Tanya Lawson, the acting Executive Director for Park Operations with the Ministry of Parks, Culture, and Sport, said the two new backcountry locations are within their existing trail system and will provide an 'off the beaten path' style of camping for those who prefer a more rustic experience. 

In Alberta, Carney follows Poilievre in pledging to speed up resource projects

Liberal Leader Mark Carney took his promise of making Canada an "energy superpower" to the heart of Canada's oil industry Wednesday, becoming the second party leader in three days to promise to speed up the review process to greenlight major national energy projects.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre made a one-project, one-review promise at a campaign stop in northwest British Columbia on Monday. Both parties are trying to convince Canadians they can ditch Canada's reputation as a place where big projects take far too long to get built.

Investigation underway into counterfeit bills circulating in Weyburn

The Weyburn Police Service is advising the community, particularly local businesses, of circulating counterfeit bills. However, Deputy Police Chief Shane St. John says the counterfeit currency isn’t hard to spot. 

“There's missing an A on Canada, the bill is made of paper, not the plastic, it actually says on it, ‘not legal tender, for motion picture use only, film production,’ it actually has warnings on the bill in small print, so just really take a hard look at it if you're getting those bills, that's $50 to $100." 

What Weyburn voters need to know for federal vote on April 28

The federal election is coming up on April 28th, but voting will open ahead of that with advance polls, which will start in just over a week.  

“Advance polls are Easter weekend,” said Margaret Tuchscherer, the returning officer for the riding of Souris-Moose Mountain. “Friday, April 18th, Saturday the 19th, Sunday the 20th, and Monday the 21st.” 

Credit union merger proposal approved by boards; member vote to come

The boards of Conexus Credit Union, Cornerstone Credit Union, and Synergy Credit Union have officially approved a proposal to merge, setting the stage for the creation of the largest credit union in Saskatchewan and one of the largest in Canada. 

In an interview with Discover Weyburn, Conexus board chair Ken Kosolofski said the recommendation reflects a shared commitment across all three organizations to put members first. 

Unprecedented 17.75 litres of GHB seized en route to Weyburn residence

Significant amounts of Gamma-Hydroxybutyrate (GHB) were seized in Weyburn last Friday, April 4th, when the Weyburn Police Service in collaboration with the Vancouver Police Department Gang Crime Unit intercepted a package en route to a Weyburn residence.  

The package was thoroughly searched, uncovering approximately 17.75 litres of GHB. Deputy Police Chief with the Weyburn Police Service says this quantity is unheard of, even by the Vancouver department.  

Enbridge comments on advancing bylaw amendment at latest R.M. of Weyburn meeting

Many eyes were on the R.M. of Weyburn No. 67 council on Friday as they held their regular meeting, with items on the agenda pertaining to the proposed Seven Stars wind energy project. 

Proposed bylaw amendment   

This included the first reading of a bylaw amendment requested by Enbridge, the company behind the project, regarding the permissible height of wind turbines.
