Strong turnout for Souris-Moose Mountain riding advance polls

Voters in southeast Saskatchewan have been busy over the last few days as advanced polling swept through the country, opening up polls ahead of election day. With polls open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. from Friday to Monday, voters had 48 hours to get out and make a choice early.

According to Margaret Tuchscherer, Elections Canada's returning officer for the Souris-Moose Mountain area, the unofficial count for the four days sits at 12,528 votes cast at stations.

Agricultural Water Management Fund application deadline coming up April 30

The 2025 Agricultural Water Management Fund is now accepting applications. This fund aims to support agricultural producers and local governments in developing effective water management projects.

Naomi Paley, Manager of Drainage Extension at the Water Security Agency, explains that qualified applicants can receive up to $95,000 per project through a cost-sharing approach across three funding streams:

Yvonne Marie Hall, aged 99, passed away peacefully on November 10, 2024 in Weyburn, SK. Born on October 18, 1925, in Marolles-en-Brie, France, to Marie Francoise Cotbreil and Paul Alfred Vigoureux, Yvonne immigrated to Canada with her parents and younger sister Paulette in 1930. They stayed with her mother’s sister Philomene Porte and uncle Jean-Claude after arriving in Canada, and later moved to a farm northwest of Gladmar, SK that her father homesteaded. She became a naturalized citizen of Canada on January 27, 1938.

Roundabout construction to resume in May at Highways 13 & 39

The Saskatchewan Ministry of Highways has provided an update on the $29 million twinning project along Highway 39, which, here in Weyburn, includes a roundabout at the Highway 13 intersection.

The contractor completed winter grading in mid-March. The next phase of the construction work will resume at the site of the roundabout, weather permitting, as early as May 6th.

Power lines were the only utilities on the construction footprint at the roundabout site, which have now been removed. 

Young leaders invited to join Saskatchewan’s emergency preparedness council

The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) is now accepting applications for the new Youth Preparedness Council (YPC).

The council is open to Saskatchewan students in Grades 8 to 12 who are passionate about public safety, emergency preparedness, and community leadership.

The YPC offers a platform for youth to share ideas, collaborate on projects, and gain hands-on experience in emergency management and public education.

2025 regular season lacrosse underway in Weyburn

The 2025 lacrosse season is officially underway here in Weyburn, as two teams hit the road for their first league matchups of the year.  

The Weyburn Credit Union U11 Thrashers travel west to Moose Jaw, taking on the Moose Jaw Mustangs Red team at 7:00 P.M. at the Moose Jaw Kinsmen Sportsplex.  

The Weyburn Panther Drilling U17 Thrashers will head the same direction as they’ll take on the Moose Jaw Mustangs team at the Moose Jaw Kinsmen Sportsplex at 8:00 P.M. 

'They didn't cross a line, but they did need to be removed' Fan escorted from Red Wings arena

Tensions are high as the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings - Weyburn's local junior hockey team - have made it into the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League Finals. 

At the latest home game last week, the Weyburn Police Service were called to escort an intoxicated fan from the arena after they refused to cooperate with security staff. Deputy Police Chief Shane St. John attributes this behavior to the mounting energy. 

Spark creativity this spring at the Credit Union Spark Centre

The Weyburn Credit Union Spark Centre’s spring programming is in full swing with events for all ages.  

Leisure Services Manager with the City of Weyburn, Amanda Wallace, explains what's coming up at the facility, beginning with their Tot Turf Time. This runs Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. for children aged zero to five. 

For local teens, they are hosting a Creating Together Teens class with art gallery curator Regan Lanning.  

The cattle market volatility in the first quarter of 2025 has been pretty extreme

Cattle market analyst Anne Wasko from Gateway Livestock says that's largely due to tariff uncertainties leading up to April 2nd. 

She notes despite that cattle prices in Western Canada have remained strong, hitting record highs across all classes of cattle with slaughter cow prices hitting another high last week.

Advance poll turnout breaks record with 7.3M ballots cast, Elections Canada says

The waning days of the federal election campaign saw voters turn out in record numbers for advance polls and party leaders attempt to poke holes in each others' platforms.

Elections Canada said in a news release Tuesday that the four days of advance polling between Friday and Monday set a new record for turnout, with 7.3 million people casting ballots early.

That's up 25 per cent from the 5.8 million people who took part in advance voting in the 2021 federal election.
