Weyburn planning to slow Dutch elm disease spread
Every year, the City of Weyburn works to deal with Dutch elm disease. The work starts in June and continues throughout the summer.
“We’re looking for symptomatic elm trees, and we will actually take a sample and send it off to see if the fungus is present,” explained Parks Manager Curtis Block. “If it is a positive result, the only action we have is complete removal of the tree and disposal of the tree at the landfill.”

WPL Spring Book Sale kicks off with a crowd
The Weyburn Public Library is hosting the Spring Book Sale, which kicked off this morning. As usual, there was a lineup at the front door for those eager to find some great deals on books and other media items.
It's not just about great deals on books - though, on Saturday, anyone can fill a box of books for just $10 - it's about supporting all of the library's free programming for adults, teens, and children.
Matonovich save named SJHL Highlight of the Year
All season long, the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings have been showcasing their skills with a number of highlight reel plays. One play, however, has stood out above the rest.
On March 8th, in a game against the Melville Millionaires, goaltender Ty Matonovich made a save that has captured the attention of the entire league. Divng across the crease, he got his stick in front of a shot by Millionaires' forward Gaborik Carlson, saving what looked to be a sure goal. After a vote by fans, the save was named the SJHL's Highlight of the Year.

World Atlas recently named Weyburn the number two Most Neighbourly Town in the Prairies.
MLA for Weyburn Bengough, Mike Weger, says he’s not surprised to see the community so high on the list.
“We're one of the best places in the world to live, work, raise a family. Pretty much every community in Saskatchewan I feel the same about, but I feel a little stronger, of course, about Weyburn, which is where I'm living, working, and raising a family and I'm just very happy to see that our community gets recognized on a list like this.”
Two charged after Weyburn Police find condition breaches
Built in to the regular duties of a Weyburn police officer is checking that community members on release conditions are complying with them. Deputy Chief with the Weyburn Police Service, Shane St. John, sends this reminder after two separate people were found in violation last week.
“We are out checking conditions and if they're not in compliance, they will be charged so I think it's just more of a reminder to the people that are on conditions that that we do check them and we check them often just to make sure that they are in compliance.”

A spokesperson for Canadian Foodgrains Bank says they are very grateful for a recent funding announcement by our federal government. The Canadian government is providing a $4 million grant for Canadian Foodgrains Bank to address the growing hunger crisis in Sudan.
According to Canadian Foodgrains Bank, nearly 25 million people in Sudan are facing acute hunger since the outbreak of civil war in April 2023. That makes up more than half the population. As many as 640,000 people are already experiencing famine-like conditions in five identified areas.
Freedom Convoy organizers Lich, Barber to hear verdict in mischief trial
Freedom Convoy organizers Tamara Lich and Chris Barber are set to hear a verdict today in the joint trial over their roles in the mass protest against pandemic health measures that rolled into Ottawa more than three years ago.
Lich and Barber were both charged with mischief, intimidation and counselling others to break the law in relation to their roles in the 2022 protest that drew thousands of demonstrators to Ottawa for three weeks.
Their trial wrapped up in September after hearing 45 days of evidence and legal arguments.
