WPS issues traffic safety reminders as students return to school
The Weyburn Police Service has student safety at top of mind as schools are back in session today. Deputy Chief Shane St. John says officers are patrolling school zones closely during pick-up and drop-off times, especially as traffic adjusts to the busier mornings and afternoons.
Children & Youth choirs at Grace United Church getting ready to sing
A new season is beginning for the three youth choirs at Grace United Church: Small Voices Of Grace, The Spirit of Grace, and The Spirit Singers.
Children and Youth Music Director Kendra Gonczy said they are always accepting of new members.
"All are welcome. It is a free program. We are based at Grace United Church, so we do base around the faith and our beliefs, but everyone is welcome to give it a try if they would like."
She said each of the choirs sings during a monthly church service.
VIDEO: Wildland fire brought under control with aerial support
A wildland fire north of the junction of Highways 13 and 28 on Sunday had Yellow Grass Fire Rescue, along with aid from the Radville and Pangman fire departments, working well into the night.
Yellow Grass Fire Rescue was dispatched to the fire shortly after 4 p.m., and mutual aid was requested from the Pangman and Radville departments. The crews battled the wind-driven blaze to keep it away from a dense treeline in the valley. They were also assisted with aerial support from Farr Air, who made multiple water drops.
Majority of Canadian youth have been bullied, child poverty on the rise: report
A new report released as students across the country return to school finds bullying, poverty and mental illness are on the rise among Canadian youth and urges action from policy-makers to improve the lives of children.
The Raising Canada report says more than 70 per cent of Canadian youth between the ages of 12 and 17 experienced bullying in the last year, and more than 13 per cent of children were living in poverty by the end of 2024.
Falcons, Ravens open minor football season with victories
The season kicked off for Weyburn Minor Football on Saturday, with two teams in action at the newly named Brent Allin Field.
The U14 Weyburn Young Fellow Falcons earned a hard-fought 7-0 victory in a defensive showdown against the Swift Current Steelers. Both offences moved the ball effectively throughout the game, but strong defensive play kept points off the scoreboard.
Team Red edges Team White to take Eric Calibaba and Friends Cup
The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings wrapped up training camp Monday afternoon with the annual Red and White Game at the Whitecap Resources Centre.
In a close-fought game that gave fans a glimpse of the talent competing for a roster spot, Team Red came away with a 4-3 victory over Team White.
Devon Boyle, Jacob Elliott, Ryder Rommelaere, and Emmette Yurkowski all found the back of the net for Team Red. Adam Savage Keller contributed two assists in the effort.
For Team White, Talen Lewis scored two goals, while Sawyer Aquila added one.
Busy camping season wraps up soon at Nickle Lake Regional Park
While there are still a couple of weeks left to enjoy the amenities at Nickle Lake Regional Park, the end of the camping season is just around the corner.
Park Manager Darren Wheeler said there will be no more bookings as of September 15th, when the park closes for the season.
"We had a very busy summer. Park attendance was way up this year and it's just like the new activities and the new stuff in the park, everybody came out. Summer was just actually cool but it was a good summer, like it wasn't too hot, it was just nice to enjoy on the beach and enjoy the water."
'Mercy of politics': Canadian farmers weigh plans as Chinese tariff hits canola price
As Chinese tariffs on Canadian canola products continue to hamper the cash price of one of the country's most valuable crops, farming experts say producers have big decisions ahead of them.
Market analyst Chuck Penner with LeftField Commodity Research said while future prices are down slightly, the cash price farmers receive for their canola, also known as the basis, is much lower.

Due to ongoing construction on King Street, the increase in traffic during school pick-up and drop-off times has warranted safety reminders from the Weyburn Police Service (WPS). Deputy Chief Shane St. John says safety in this area is their highest priority.
SECPSD looks forward to an exciting 2025-26 school year
Students across the city, province, and country are returning to school this week; however, teachers and other faculty have been at work preparing throughout August. Keith Keating, Director of Education with Southeast Cornerstone Public School Division, says the week leading up to the students' arrival was a flurry of activity.
