Girl, 15, lit on fire at Saskatoon high school, staff injured trying to help

A 15-year-old girl is in hospital with serious injuries after she was lit on fire at a Saskatoon high school, police said Thursday. 

Sgt. Ken Kane told reporters that a school resource officer, who was at Evan Hardy Collegiate for a different matter, apprehended a 14-year-old girl as a suspect.

He did not say how the victim was lit on fire or the extent of her burn injuries. 

"Our officer that was on scene was at the immediate area of the event within 30 seconds and had someone in custody within 60 seconds," he said.

Weyburn Police Service officially swears in new Chief Brent VanDeSype

Today the Weyburn Police Service saw the swearing in of new Police Chief Brent VanDeSype.  

Chief VanDeSype has served as Deputy Chief for the Weyburn Police Service since 2021. He stepped in as interim chief after previous chief, Jamie Blunden, resigned to take on the same role in Estevan. A release from the City of Weyburn issued last Friday says the decision to make the transition to Chief reflects the city’s confidence in his ability to lead the Weyburn Police Service. 

The swearing in occurred today at noon outside the council chambers at City Hall.

 

Leisure Centre indoor pool reopening delayed: City of Weyburn

The reopening of the Weyburn Leisure Centre's indoor pool has been delayed due to an unforeseen issue discovered during routine preparation for the upcoming season.

According to a press release on Thursday afternoon, the scheduled opening date was originally set for September 9th, but the City of Weyburn has regretfully announced that, while filling the pool, staff identified a significant water leak.

“This pool basin issue was unforeseen and only became evident once the pool was refilled for the upcoming season,” said Weyburn Leisure Services Director Andrew Crowe.

Halfway through harvest: Weekly Crop Report

Harvest has hit the halfway mark here in the southeast region of Saskatchewan. Farmers got back in the field after some stormy weather hindered progress in August. In September, sunny and windy conditions have sped up the drying of crops and with more sun forecasted into the middle of the month farmers can expect little delays weather-wise.  

Laura Morrissette to run again for Weyburn City Council

Weyburn City Councillor Laura Morrissette plans to run again in the upcoming City of Weyburn municipal election.

Morrissette, who has served on Council for the past four years and also from 2012 to 2016, said she doesn't want the seat on the merit of being a woman, but for her community involvement and connections.

Highways Minister comments on the importance of transportation in Saskatchewan

This week is Transportation Week in Saskatchewan. 

"It is important for us to recognize those who keep our economy moving," said Highways Minister Lori Carr. "This week is about recognizing the thousands of dedicated people who are vital to getting goods and products to market and build and maintain our province's infrastructure." 

Carr said within a landlocked province like ours, transportation is critically important, which is why drivers need to use care and patience when dealing with the means by which goods are delivered to our communities.

Weyburn Riders revving up for annual Toy Run

The Weyburn Independent Riders want to help the Salvation Army this holiday season with their annual Santa Claus Toy Run Parade!

"Last year the need for food was greater so we collected that," said Laurie Norman in a release to DiscoverWeyburn. "This year we are returning to collecting toys."

The Independent Riders will set Santa's sleigh up at Wal-Mart today and tomorrow, September 5th and 6th, between 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., hoping to collect as many toys as possible for local kids this holiday season.
