Weyburn Riders revving up for annual Toy Run

The Weyburn Independent Riders want to help the Salvation Army this holiday season with their annual Santa Claus Toy Run Parade!

"Last year the need for food was greater so we collected that," said Laurie Norman in a release to DiscoverWeyburn. "This year we are returning to collecting toys."

The Independent Riders will set Santa's sleigh up at Wal-Mart today and tomorrow, September 5th and 6th, between 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., hoping to collect as many toys as possible for local kids this holiday season. 

Dutch Elm Disease update: Pruning ban ends in Weyburn

The elm pruning ban initiated on April 1st has now been lifted. The ban is in place to prevent the spread of Dutch Elm Disease.  

Parks manager for the City of Weyburn, Curtis Block, says the parks department annually surveys for symptomatic Dutch Elm Disease trees within the city, this year saw a slight decrease. 34 elm trees were identified as having the disease compared to 43 last year. Since 2017, 144 total elm trees have been identified and removed. 

Elevation Athletics brings recreational pickleball to Weyburn

Elevation Athletics, a not-for-profit sports and recreation organization, is launching a recreational pickleball league in Weyburn.  

Justin Mitchell, director of Elevation Athletics, says the organization focuses on smaller communities as opposed to bigger cities, as they are typically underserviced regarding recreational activities. Elevation brings recreational pickleball to these smaller communities, and trains local people to run the programs. 

Beyond the sniffles: Managing seasonal allergies

It is known by a few names. Seasonal allergies, allergic rhinitis, hay fever. Every year, around the same time, people start to experience symptoms such as a runny and congested nose, itchy and watery eyes, and more.  

“They are caused by exposure to pollens from trees, grasses, or wheat,” explained Dr. Stanley Enebeli, a Medical Health Officer with the Saskatchewan Health Authority for the Weyburn and Estevan areas. “This pollen exposure can trigger various allergic reactions.” 

Weyburn Legion receives grants thanks to the Veteran Service Club Support Program

The Royal Canadian Legion Number 47 in Weyburn is one of the 81 Legion branches throughout Saskatchewan that will be receiving some much-needed upgrades thanks to grants. The Saskatchewan Veteran Service Club Support Program. Provided by the Government of Saskatchewan, up to $30,000 will go toward helping alleviate the costs of repairs and upgrades.  

Weyburn Communithon fundraiser to include dinner, comedy, dancing: what more do you want?

A Night of Comedy and Music, a fundraiser for the Weyburn Communithon, is coming up Friday, September 13th.

The 19+ event will be held at the Weyburn Legion, and will feature Comedian Kelly Taylor.

The $60 cash-only tickets will be on sale at Old Fashion Foods or the Welsh Kitchen until September 11th, which means no tickets will be available at the door.

Communications Committee Chair, Raven Daer said the evening kicks off with cocktails at 6:30 p.m., followed by a roast beef dinner at 7 p.m. 

Weyburn Police arrest impaired driver after two citizen tips

The Weyburn Police Service charged a person with impaired driving after receiving two separate calls last Friday afternoon. The two calls reported a vehicle that was driving erratically, and at an unsafe speed.  

“They were spot on,” said Sergeant Shane St. John. “Officers were able to locate the individual, and they were impaired, and they were charged accordingly.” 

NDP pulling out of supply and confidence deal with Liberals

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh has ripped up the supply and confidence deal with the Liberals that helped keep the minority government in power. 

In a social media video posted Wednesday afternoon, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh said he notified Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of the decision. 

"Canadians are fighting a battle.  A battle for the future of the middle class.  Justin Trudeau has proven again and again he will always cave to corporate greed," Singh said in the video directly addressing Canadians.
