Mark Stephen Caine, late of Tyvan, SK passed away on August 14, 2025 at the age of 65 years.

Mark was predeceased by his father Fredrick Caine; mother, Marjorie Caine; and his grandparents.

Mark is survived by his brothers, Gary Caine of Leoville, SK, Glenn (Marlene) Caine of Drayton Valley, AB, Gene (Donna) Caine of Drayton Valley, AB; his sister, Vicki Caine of Weyburn, SK; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, great-great nieces and nephews.

Saskatchewan farmers now have over half the winter cereal harvest complete

Farmers are working on bringing in the harvest as the weather cooperates.

Last week's hot, dry weather also brought its share of thunderstorm activity with strong winds and hail which caused some lodging in crops. The Nipawin area had the most rainfall, with 42 mm, followed by the North Battleford and Consul areas with 30 mm and 28 mm, respectively. A number of other areas around the province are also seeing some scattered showers.

More funding available through Alberta's Feeder Associations Loan Guarantee Program

Agriculture and Irrigation Minister RJ Sigurdson has announced an increase in the lending limit on the Feeder Associations Loan Guarantee Program (FALGP).

Locally owned feeder associations utilize the program for low-interest financing backed by a government guarantee. Through the program feeder associations help livestock producers get financing to buy animals and grow their herds.

Producer, Dustin Lamb says the program played a huge part in his decision to return to the family farm and will be instrumental in keeping it going.

WPS reminds drivers to have a safe, sober long weekend

This long weekend will be the final days of summer break for students, before heading back to school on Tuesday. Deputy Chief with the Weyburn Police Service, Shane St. John predicts busy highways. 

“It's the last weekend before school. Sort of last hurrah, last long weekend. If people have nice weather, the highways will be busy with a lot of traffic, I'm sure, if it's hot out.” 

St. John says while police operations will be running as usual, drivers may see an increase in police activity out on the highway. 

Excitement in the air as Weyburn Red Wings open 2025-26 training camp

The sounds of skates carving ice and pucks hitting boards have returned to Whitecap Resources Centre, as the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings opened their main training camp Friday morning. A mix of returning veterans and new prospects is on the ice, all looking to start the new season on the right foot. 

For 20-year-old forward Ashtyn Shields, who is entering his second season with the team, the feeling around the rink is palpable.

As students across Weyburn enjoy their final long weekend of summer, teachers have already been hard at work for a week, preparing for the start of classes this coming Tuesday. 

For Sean Galvin, a Grade 6 teacher at St. Michael School, this preparation week is an essential time to shift from summer relaxation back to a school-year mindset. 

McLeod, Carman James

Carman James McLeod, late of Weyburn, SK passed away on August 26, 2025 at the age of 80 years.

He was predeceased by his wife, Linda McLeod; and his parents, Lillian and Hughie McLeod.

Carman is survived by his son, Darin (Leona) McLeod of Saskatoon, SK and their family, Brandon, Keaton and Morgan; his daughter, Shelley (Chad) Baudria of Weyburn, SK.

A Service of Remembrance will be held on Saturday, September 6, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. from RD Family Funeral Chapel, Weyburn, SK. Interment will follow at Green Acres Memorial Gardens, Weyburn, SK.

Weyburn producers brace for impact of 75 per cent tariff on canola seed

Southeast producers are feeling the effects of a 75 per cent provisional tariff on Canadian canola seed imposed by China. The tariff, effective since August 14th, will have far-reaching impacts outside of the agriculture industry as well, as Executive Director for the Weyburn Chamber of Commerce, Monica Osborn, says it's a direct hit to Weyburn’s economy and the livelihood of local producers. 

“It marks the most significant disruption to our export market since 2019, and for Weyburn and our surrounding communities, the impact is immediate and deeply personal.” 

Drivers urged to use caution on Highway 28 following culvert failure

The Saskatchewan Ministry of Highways is advising motorists to be cautious on a portion of Highway 28 after a culvert failure led to a sinkhole. 

The affected area is located on the highway between its junction with Highway 13 and Radville. According to Dan Palmer, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Highways, the ministry became aware of the sinkhole on Monday morning after a culvert in the area failed.
