Beach reopens at Nickle Lake Regional Park

As of Wednesday afternoon, the beach at Nickle Lake Regional Park has reopened, with the 'Do Not Swim' Advisory being rescinded.

However, park management said that because there is still a low level of algae present in the swimming area, a 'Caution' has been issued as a general warning for swimmers and skiers to take caution if algae is found to be present.

 

 

Renovations underway at Prairie Sky Co-op

As some may have noticed this past week, renovations have been getting started at the Prairie Sky Co-op Food Store.

In addition to the exterior work as seen in the above photo, General Manager Kevin Arthur said the work will include the replacement of refrigeration equipment, produce displays, and floors.

The pharmacy will also be moving to the center of the west wall, allowing more space for the much-needed resource.

Canada's rail system has ground to a halt

CN and CPKC took steps early Thursday morning to lockout over 9000 employees who are members of the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference after an agreement was not reached.

In a press release following the lockout, CN notes that they chose to lock out employees after the union did not respond to another offer by CN in a final attempt to avoid a labour disruption.

National rail shutdown begins as employees locked out at both major Canadian railways

In a first for Canada, freight traffic on its two largest railways has simultaneously ground to a halt, threatening to upend supply chains trying to move forward from pandemic-related disruptions and a port strike last year.

In the culmination of months of increasingly bitter negotiations, Canadian National Railway Co. and Canadian Pacific Kansas City Ltd. locked out 9,300 engineers, conductors and yard workers after the parties disagreed on a new contract before the midnight deadline.

Lightning, hail, and wind pummel southeast Saskatchewan

Thunderstorms raged across southeast Saskatchewan last night, bringing lightning, thunder, rain, and hail. Strong winds were also reported, with gusts up to 65 kilometres an hour from the north reported in Weyburn, and much stronger winds reported in areas to the north.  

The storm system moved up into the province from Montana around 5:00 p.m., with some of the severe storm warnings being escalated to tornado warnings near Mankota and Coronach. 

Mental Health Act invoked twice last week: Weyburn Police Service

The Weyburn Police Service handled 12 individual calls for assistance last week relating to mental health concerns. 

While in many instances, police can use their training to deescalate and work to find safe solutions with people suffering from mental health concerns, in two of last week's cases, the people were required to be apprehended under the Mental Health Act and were taken to the Weyburn General Hospital for appropriate treatment.

Weyburn's Deputy Chief of Police, Brent VanDeSype, has now taken on the role of Interim Chief of Police for the Weyburn Police Service.

He said he worked well with the former Police Chief Jamie Blunden, who will be the new Police Chief for the Estevan Police Service beginning in October.
