Despite rain, southeast producers make seeding progress

Despite widespread rainfall over the past week, producers in southeast Saskatchewan have made steady progress with spring seeding. According to the latest crop report from the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture, 63 per cent of crops have been seeded in the region, slightly behind the provincial average of 72 per cent, but ahead of the five-year regional average of 58 per cent. 

Weyburn police arrest man after incident on Sixth Ave SW

A major police presence in Weyburn’s southwest area Wednesday afternoon was the result of what the Weyburn Police Service described as a high-risk situation involving serious threats to public safety. 

During the afternoon, officers responded to a call involving a man who had made alarming threats. 

“The individual who made the call made some serious threats that made us concerned for that individual's safety, some other individual's safety, and then also the public's safety,” explained Sergeant Riley Ross with the Weyburn Police Service. 

Union says Canada Post offers 'fall short' as strike deadline nears

The union representing about 55,000 Canada Post employees said the latest offers from the postal service "fall short" with hours to go until a looming strike deadline.

Canada Post meanwhile said Thursday it's already seeing mail volumes decline ahead of another possible labour disruption and is pushing for an urgent resolution.

Spokesperson Lisa Liu said Canada Post hasn't yet received a response from the union about its proposals issued a day earlier.

The postal service is ready to resume bargaining "as soon as possible" with a mediator at the table, she said.

Richard Dyke sentenced to 17 years in prison

In a historic sentence, Richard Dyke was sentenced to 17 years in prison for multiple sexual offences against children in Moose Jaw Provincial Court on Wednesday. 

The sentence handed down by Judge Brian Hendrickson is the longest sentence ever handed out in Saskatchewan for sexual offences against children. 

Dyke, 48, was in the court and sat in the inmate’s box looking down for the majority of the proceedings. 

WPS investigating copper theft attempt, Deputy Chief advises owners

The Weyburn Police Service received a report of a Break-and-Enter on May 18th of a cut fence at a local business, where the theft of copper was attempted. The investigation is ongoing with the lone offender described as wearing a hoodie and backpack and riding a bicycle. 

Deputy Chief Shane St. John said their preparedness for the heist indicates they have some experience with these kinds of thefts.

Helping hurts: When rescuing wildlife does more harm than good

As spring turns into summer in Saskatchewan, it’s becoming increasingly common for residents to spot young animals alone in nature. But despite their apparent vulnerability, the best thing people can do is keep their distance, according to Conservation Officer Ted Glass. 

“The real short answer is just to leave it alone,” said Glass. “There’s reasons why that animal is there, and very likely mum has put that animal there and told her kid to stay there. Don’t move. And they’ll be back.” 

Spirit of Inclusion Award presented to Weyburn's Superannuated Teachers

Members of Inclusion Weyburn presented the Superannuated Teachers of Weyburn with a 'Spirit of Inclusion Award' on Wednesday at the Wheatland Seniors Centre.

In-Wey President Jackie Wilson said the way retired teachers still care about children and youth continues to shine through long after they retire from teaching.

"You know the old saying, 'You can take the teacher out of the class, but you can't take the class out of the teacher' sort of along that line," she shared. "They've always cared for children, and they likely always will."

Tonight at WPL: Info Night at Southeast College

Southeast College held its 50th Anniversary Career Fair and open house at the end of April and is now getting ready for an information night tonight at 6:30 p.m. at the Weyburn Public Library.

The event is in partnership with the Weyburn Public Library and will allow those interested in the college the chance to ask questions and inquire before making their post-secondary decisions for this fall.

Poilievre names 48 Conservative MPs as critics, announces House leadership team

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has named 73 MPs to his party's leadership team and critic roles ahead of next week's return to the House of Commons.

He has named 48 Conservative members of Parliament to critic roles, while another 14 will become associate critics.

Most of them are returning MPs, though some have been shuffled to new positions left by people who were not re-elected on April 28.
