Weyburn police to get new Tasers, biometric sensors
During its meeting Monday night, Weyburn City Council approved a request from the Weyburn Police Service to reallocate up to $60,000 from a fund originally intended for the introduction of the Next Generation 911 system, or NG911. The money would then be dedicated to the purchase of new Tasers for officers and the purchase of biometric monitoring equipment.
Subsurface mineral public offering nets bids in southeast
The Weyburn area continues to lead the way when it comes to potential lithium extraction. The provincial government’s public offering of subsurface minerals on July 7th, the first of the fiscal year, saw a nearly 13,000-hectare parcel in the Weyburn area get picked up by Millennium Land, Ltd for just over $27,000.
Inflation in Saskatchewan balanced with drop in fuel prices
The overall cost of living in Saskatchewan didn’t change too much in June, according to data released Tuesday by Statistics Canada. However, while there wasn’t much of a change to the overall inflation rate, there were some substantial changes.
WPS utilize de-escalation techniques in hotel assault
Weyburn Police Service members attended a local hotel last week after a report of an altercation between two women. Deputy Chief Shane St. John says one woman reportedly assaulted the other without provocation and refused to exit her room once police arrived.
“She was very agitated when police arrived and did not want to have any contact with the police. The members did make the area safe. They didn't know if she had any weapons or anything. They were able to calm her down and talk her out of her room without incident where she was arrested and charged for that assault.”

Beavers back in the win column
The Weyburn Beavers returned to the win column Tuesday night, as they picked up a 5-4 extra innings win over Miller Express in Moose Jaw last night. With the win, the Beavers are now 6 ½ games back of Moose Jaw for the fourth and final playoff spot in the WCBL’s East Division.
Elks Park playground in Weyburn to get new surface
The playground at Elks Park in Weyburn will be getting resurfaced this summer. Weyburn City Council approved the tender for the resurfacing during Monday night’s council meeting. The repairs will address issues with the rubber surface at the accessible playground that were first identified in 2024.
The contract was awarded to DBO Industries Inc. for a total cost of $61,745. This required a budget adjustment, as it exceeded the amount initially included in the 2025 budget.
Mail theft turns up charges for assault, firearm possession
The Weyburn Police Service responded to a complaint of an assault on Saturday, occurring between two roommates. Through investigation, officers determined the male roommate had stolen mail from the other, assaulting her in the process.
Deputy Chief Shane St. John says the investigation turned up more than just one charge.
“The one roommate took the other's mail and opened it. He did do a minor assault on the female when they confronted the male, that was reported to us. And it was also found that that male had possession of a firearm without a PAL.”
RCMP arrest alleged hijacker at Vancouver airport after airspace shut down
RCMP say they've arrested the pilot of a small aircraft that was allegedly hijacked from Victoria and flown to Vancouver International Airport, where other flights had to be temporarily halted.
RCMP in Richmond, B.C., say in a statement that a report came in just after 1 p.m. Tuesday about a Cessna that "had been hijacked" and was on its way to Vancouver.
Police say the "sole occupant" of the plane was arrested after it touched down.
Stubborn core inflation in June likely cements calls for Bank of Canada rate hold
Underlying inflation remained stubbornly hot in June, leading financial markets and many economists to firm up calls for a third straight interest rate hold from the Bank of Canada later this month.
Statistics Canada said Tuesday that the annual pace of inflation accelerated to 1.9 per cent in June, up from 1.7 per cent in May and largely in line with economists’ expectations.
Prices didn't ease much at the gas pumps last month, the agency said, and higher prices on motor vehicles and other durable goods also drove inflation higher.
