Weyburn Police: We will break windows to save children and pets in hot cars

Around the world every year, the news breaks of a child or a pet that has been left in a vehicle in the sun, and due to the extreme temperatures that can happen in the interior of a car, the child or pet succumbs to the heat. It is a tragedy the Weyburn Police Service does not want to see happen here in the Opportunity City.

Police Chief Jamie Blunden explained very bluntly what the police will do if they come across an animal or child left unattended in a vehicle.

Home ice: How billet families make the Weyburn Red Wings’ season possible

As the hockey season draws near, the Weyburn Red Wings hope to score by having billet families to house players.

Cody Mapes, head coach and general manager of the Red Wings, emphasized the importance of billets for the team’s success.

“At the end of the day, if we don’t have any billets, we don’t have a hockey team,” Mapes said. “It’s obviously essential to us. Over the last couple of years, we’ve really tried to make sure that our billets are truly part of the team and part of our family.”

Recent rain, cooler weather limiting spread of wildfires in Jasper National Park

Cool and wet weather is making a difference in Jasper National Park.

The park posted a statement on X late Thursday night saying cooler temperatures and up to 15 millimetres of rain since midnight had led to minimal fire activity.

The park says due to the rainfall, fire behaviour is likely to calm over the next 72 hours.

While more rain is expected Friday, temperatures are supposed to return to the mid 20s by Saturday, which the park says will lead to an increase in fire activity.

Hot, dry weather speeds up crop development: Weekly crop report

The July 16th to 22nd crop report from the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture says the hot and dry weather has quickened crop development and caused deterioration. Areas most affected by this are places that had less precipitation earlier in the season. The impact on crop yields, hayland regrowth, and pasture lands can be lessened if some rainfall occurs.

Change of venue: Concerned land owners to host meeting to discuss proposed area wind power project

A meeting will be held on July 31st at 7 p.m. at McKenna Hall for anyone interested in having further discussions concerning a proposed wind power project in the R.M.s of Weyburn and Griffin.

In late June, the Saskatchewan Indigenous Investment Finance Corporation (SIIFC) pledged up to one hundred million dollars in loan guarantees for a new renewable wind energy project to be built southeast of Weyburn. In agreement with six Indigenous and Metis partners, Enbridge Inc. has joined with SaskPower to advance the project through a power purchase agreement.
