A lifelong ambition: New constable sworn in to WPS ranks

The Weyburn Police Service swore a new member into the force on Tuesday, Al Patricio from Regina will be wearing badge number 96 following his graduation from the Saskatchewan Police College. 

Originally born in the Philippines before moving to Canada as a child, and having spent time serving with the Sheriff's Office, Chief Brent VanDeSype says he looks forward to what Patricio will bring to the community.  

“He brings with him strong work ethic and a clear passion for public service qualities that are vital in this line of work.” 

Multiple charges laid in altercation between roommates

An assault between roommates led to multiple charged laid by the Weyburn Police Service. Two men got into an altercation that resulted in both parties brandishing knives in a threatening manner. One man then drew a metal baton. 

The other man then went to the Weyburn Police Service to report the incident. Deputy Chief Shane St. John says it was fortunate that no one was seriously injured.  

RCMP release numbers from Country Thunder

With Country Thunder Saskatchewan wrapping up Sunday, the Saskatchewan RCMP have released their summary of calls for the four-day music festival. Officers responded to 156 calls for service between July 10th and 13th, a figure that police say was anticipated for an event that temporarily swells the population of the Craven area by thousands. 

Raleigh becomes first catcher to win Home Run Derby; MLB All-Star game tonight

Last night kicked off festivities for the 2025 MLB All-Star break starting with a familiar fan favourite; the T-Mobile Home Run Derby. The history of the Home Run Derby dates back to the 1960's with a TV show called Home Run Derby which featured MLB stars such as Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, and Mickey Mantle slugging it out for a chance to win $2000. It was officially inaugurated in 1985 and since then, has been a smash hit for viewers looking to see the best power hitters in baseball.

Inflation rises to 1.9% in June as vehicle price hikes accelerate

The annual pace of inflation accelerated to 1.9 per cent in June as consumers were paying more at car dealerships, Statistics Canada said Tuesday.

The June price hike is up from 1.7 per cent in May and was largely in line with economists’ expectations.

StatCan said gasoline prices were nearly unchanged in June as higher crude oil prices and geopolitical conflicts ratcheted up pressure at the pumps. Motorists saw a steeper monthly decline in prices this time last year, which the agency said led to a rise in headline inflation.

Highway 39 culvert replacement approved; Weyburn faces increased costs

A major culvert replacement project along Highway 39 will be going ahead this year. The city’s portion of funding for the project was approved by Weyburn City Council, albeit at a higher cost than was originally expected.  

The issue stems from a culvert failure identified in 2022 by the Ministry of Highways, located under Highway 39 just east of Highway 35.

Fillmore celebrates grand opening of long awaited emergency services building

The Village of Fillmore is celebrating the grand opening of its new emergency services building this July 30th. Russ Leguee, president of the Fillmore EMS, says the long-awaited facility will allow the different emergency services to operate more efficiently after years of being overcrowded.
