Longest Ballot group declares victory in Poilievre's former riding amid criticism
A group trying to make a case for electoral reform by creating very long ballots is declaring victory in this week's election — even as critics accuse it of indulging in stunts that undermine democracy.
"It's been a success," said Mark Moutter, one of dozens of protest candidates who ran in the Ottawa riding of Carleton.
"I've never seen people looking more optimistically at electoral reform, ever."
Manitoba Agriculture issues first crop report of the season
Manitoba Agriculture has released its first crop report of the season, providing valuable insights into the current state of seeding and livestock activities across the province.
Oilseed Specialist Sonya Wilson says seeding is just getting underway, with provincial seeding progress at approximately three per cent. This is ahead of the five-year average of one per cent. Farmers are currently planting spring wheat, peas, and a small amount of oats, particularly in areas west of Brandon and near Rapid City, with some activity in other regions as well.

An exhibition opened up last night with a reception held at the Weyburn Art Gallery. 'A Nikkel's Worth' features photos taken by the late Greg Nikkel, spanning the better part of his more than 30-year career with the Weyburn Review.
City Curator Regan Lanning said the timing couldn't be better to hold the reception, at a time when his friends and family, not from Weyburn, would be in town for Greg's funeral today.
RCMP in Radville investigating overnight thefts
The RCMP are asking for the public’s help after an overnight incident in Radville.
Police are reporting that several vehicles were entered overnight Tuesday into Wednesday morning, with items being taken. Residents are being asked to check their vehicles and report to the Radville detachment if necessary.
Weyburn, Avonlea area roads make Worst Roads Top 10
After a month of submissions and online voting, CAA Saskatchewan unveiled the 10 worst roads in the province. As has happened in most years, there were highways in southeast Saskatchewan that made the list.
“We look for the worst unsafe roads in the province, and we had thousands and thousands of votes, and in all, a total of 1,299 roads were voted on,” explained Angel Blair, the manager of communications and public relations with CAA Saskatchewan.
'Let the friendly competition begin': Golden Garbage Can returns
Returning once again since being put on hold in 2010 after Weyburn was declared the winner, it was announced by Councillor Kellie Sidloski during Monday night's meeting of Weyburn City Council: the Golden Garbage Can competition will commence.
"It's been a 15 year-hiatus, but we are bringing back the Golden Garbage Can. It's a friendly competition between Estevan and Weyburn, a chance to showcase our communities and show off some great spots we have in each city."
Public hearing looks at wind turbine height bylaw change in R.M. of Weyburn
Ratepayers from the R.M. of Weyburn packed McKenna Hall Tuesday night for a public hearing on a proposed bylaw amendment that would remove height restrictions for domestic wind energy systems and require developers to include proposed heights in future applications.
The bylaw change was requested by Enbridge, and it is tied to the Seven Stars Wind Energy Project. The project has drawn strong support and opposition in the R.M. since it was first announced last year.

Decades in the dirt: Paslawski starts off seeding season with preparation and safety
Dale Paslawski, a farmer operating north of Weyburn is “living the dream” as seeding season approaches.
Paslawski began seeding operations this week, despite conditions on the moist side saying some lower areas are not quite ready for seed.
“I typically would have started on the 1st of May, but I decided to jump the gun a little bit and I'm doing what's called living the dream. It's been 39 years since me and my wife have been farming together and I still haven't lost that mojo. I love every minute of it.”
