Weyburn Agricultural Society's 116th annual Fair Days: schedules
The Weyburn Agricultural Society's 116th annual Fair Days kick off tomorrow with the 4H Light Horse Show.
"We have a whole week planned of activities," shared president Tyler Metheral. "Then we move into the calf show and we have our big sale, the calf sale on Wednesday, July 2nd. Then, we move into the Fair Days with the Midway and we have the Rumble in the Ring, and then Friday and Saturday, we wrap up with the Souris River Rodeo and of course Midway with all the fun food and all that kind of fun stuff.”

In the week of June 15th to 22nd, the Weyburn Police Service response to 120 calls for service. Here are some of the notable events from the week with follow up from Deputy Police Chief Shane St. John.
A total of 15 calls were made regarding mental health and wellbeing checks. Four of these incidents resulted in people being transported to the hospital for further care and assessment. Three separate incidents saw adults found to have overdosed and transported to the hospital.
Fred Sandeski approved for long-term care
Fred Sandeski will be moving into long-term care at the Weyburn Special Care Home as of July 6th following a third assessment program appeal to the Ministry of Health.
In a post on social media, Fred's wife, Teresa, thanked everyone in the community who has supported their efforts to obtain this option for Fred, who had to leave his room at the care home this spring when funding ran out for his care.
"It's been a long haul, but Fred has been approved for long-term care," shared Teresa.
Enbridge makes initial community investments in Weyburn region
With a planned investment of more than $500 million to develop its proposed Seven Stars Energy Project, Enbridge Inc. has made a series of grants to local organizations that help support a strong community.
"Investing in community-driven projects and initiatives where we operate, or where we seek to operate, is only part of what being a good neighbour means to Enbridge," said Alex McNichol, Director of Power Business Development. "We invest in communities through the full lifecycle of our projects and that often begins even prior to construction."
Local ranchers key to saving endangered bird in Weyburn area
Nature Saskatchewan is drawing attention to one of the province’s most unique and endangered grassland birds, the chestnut-collared longspur.
“This is a super cool grassland specialist songbird,” explained Emily Putz, Habitat Stewardship Coordinator with Nature Saskatchewan. “They have a very bold colouring and they’re the 2025 Avian Ambassadors of Birds Canada.”
Weyburn sees provincial high rainfall, more could be coming
A powerful thunderstorm swept through Weyburn Thursday night, drenching the city with the highest recorded rainfall in the province and leading to localized flooding on a number of streets.
Environment and Climate Change Canada meteorologist Crawford Luke confirmed the storm brought 32 millimetres of rain to Weyburn, more than any other monitored location in Saskatchewan.
“Weyburn was the winner in that sense,” Luke said.
SECPSD board approves budget for next school year
The South East Cornerstone Public School Division’s board has approved its 2025-26 budget, projecting a $1.5 million cash operating deficit, an amount that will be covered by the division’s accumulated surplus. The budget now awaits final approval from the Ministry of Education.
Weyburn lacrosse teams off to box provincials in Regina
The Weyburn Lacrosse Association will be well represented at the Saskatchewan Lacrosse Association Provincial Championships this weekend in Regina, with squads competing across all four age divisions. Over three days, the Thrashers will be taking on teams from across the province in round-robin and playoff action at the Co-Operators Centre in the provincial capital.

Canada’s system of developing wheat varieties is both efficient and effective, says a University of Saskatchewan agricultural economist.
Australia invests much more into wheat genetics and improving varieties, but the yield gains are similar to Canadian results.
“In Australia, they’re spending three to five times what we are, right now, on wheat research and wheat genetics,” said Richard Gray, Canadian grain policy research chair at the U of S.
