Dale Paslawski, a farmer operating north of Weyburn is “living the dream” as seeding season approaches. 

Paslawski began seeding operations this week, despite conditions on the moist side saying some lower areas are not quite ready for seed. 

“I typically would have started on the 1st of May, but I decided to jump the gun a little bit and I'm doing what's called living the dream. It's been 39 years since me and my wife have been farming together and I still haven't lost that mojo. I love every minute of it.” 

WPS finds individual in critical condition after missed communication raises alarm

The Weyburn Police Service responded to several wellbeing checks last week, with one incident resulting in someone taken to the hospital in critical condition. 

WPS Corporal Ryan Chernaiwsky says being called for wellbeing checks is not uncommon, and typically stems from a lack of communication for an unusual amount of time.

Ontario, Prairies blocked Liberals from an election-night majority blowout

The Liberals rose from the ashes under Prime Minister Mark Carney in a stunning reversal of fortunes this year, but the party's failure to sweep many of the ridings it sought Monday night denied it a resounding majority mandate.

A big part of that failure happened in Ontario, where the party lost many incumbents — even as Carney called for a strong mandate to deal with the threat posed by U.S. President Donald Trump.

Elections Canada says more than 19.5M voters cast a ballot in federal election

Elections Canada says more than 68 per cent of eligible voters cast a ballot in the federal election — more than 19.5 million people.

While this election was widely expected to see increased turnout, it did not surpass the record set in March 1958, when 79.4 per cent of eligible Canadians voted.

But the nearly 68.7 per cent turnout was the best since the 1993 federal election, which saw 69.6 per cent of eligible voters cast a ballot.

Smile Cookies are back at Tim Horton's this week, and once again the proceeds are going to the Weyburn and District Hospital Foundation.

"Smile Cookies is on this week until May 4th," said WDHF Office Manager Whitney Johnson. "You can buy single cookies for $2, or a box of 12."

"New this year, they also have Smiles Cookie reversible plushies that are $5 each, and then $2 of that will go towards the Foundation."

MLA Mike Weger looks ahead to partnership with newly elected MP Steven Bonk

The riding of Souris-Moose Mountain saw a landslide win for Conservative candidate Steven Bonk in the federal election last night, as he took approximately 84 percent of the vote.  

MLA for Weyburn-Bengough Mike Weger was with Bonk at the Weyburn Legion last night as results came in. He describes his reaction to Bonk’s election, saying he is pleased with the results, and the opportunity to work with Steven Bonk as the elected MP.  

Key agriculture voices returning to Parliament

The Liberals have won their fourth mandate this time under the leadership of leader Mark Carney.

When Mark Carney formed government as Canada's 24th Prime Minister on March 14, 2025, he selected 34-year-old Kody Blois from the Kings-Hants riding in Nova Scotia as the Federal Minister for Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and Rural Economic Development.

Blois is heading back to Parliament after winning his riding last night. Expectations are that Carney could keep him in that role, but that will be determined when he announces his new cabinet in the days ahead.

Woman wanted by Weyburn RCMP appears in court

A woman whom the Weyburn RCMP detachment asked the public to help locate was arrested.  

Forty-year-old Anja Sarty appeared in Weyburn Provincial Court Tuesday morning, facing a number of charges that stem back over two years. The charges include fraud, forgery, theft, breaching conditions imposed by the court, and failure to appear in court. In all, there are 12 charges.
