Fundraising group initiates improvements at Mainprize Regional Park
A new fountain in the trout pond at Mainprize Regional Park's golf course is the first of many projects slated to be completed by the Dr. Mainprize Park Foundation, which was formed last spring to help raise funds for various improvements at the park.
General Manager Michelle Walsh said the group is running the majority of the events at the park for this purpose.
"The group just actually incepted in April of 2024 and it's made-up of our local campers, residents, volunteers, people around the park people who are pretty invested in the park," she shared.
Severe weather again likely in Weyburn area
While the storms didn’t develop in the Weyburn area on Wednesday, the conditions for storms to develop on Thursday are still prevalent in the region. Forecasts and models show the conditions will be most favourable for thunderstorm development in the late afternoon and early evening.
Crops in southeast progressing well; area receives much-needed rain
Much of southeast Saskatchewan received significant rainfall last week, according to the latest crop report from the provincial Ministry of Agriculture. While the rain did help improve topsoil moisture conditions, storms associated with the rainfall at times brought some hail and strong winds, both of which were named as causes of some damage.
'It's something out of the norm' WPS response to domestic disturbance
The Weyburn Police Service received 120 calls for service in the week of June 15th to 22nd, including a call for a domestic disturbance. Deputy Police Chief Shane St. John explains that these calls can refer to a number of different scenarios.
“It is an umbrella term; it's something out of the norm. It could be a heated argument, like very heated, even if it isn't physical. That's a domestic disturbance. It could be a neighbor or a passerby walking by in the street that hears it and calls it in.”
Early deficit too much for Beavers to overcome against Medicine Hat
The Weyburn Beavers couldn’t recover from a rough start Wednesday night at Tom Laing Park, falling 7-3 to the Medicine Hat Mavericks in front of 421 fans. A seven-run deficit proved too much to overcome despite a spirited push in the second half of the game.
Beavers head coach Cam Williams was blunt in his assessment of the early innings.
No evidence federal election was affected by foreign interference, commissioner says
Canada's elections commissioner said Wednesday she has no evidence to suggest the federal election result in April was affected by foreign interference, disinformation or voter intimidation — even though the volume of complaints about the campaign shot way up.
In a preliminary report, Commissioner Caroline Simard said her office received more than 16,000 complaints about the spring campaign that ended on April 28 — seven times the number of complaints received in the 2019 and 2021 elections.
Senator Patrick Brazeau collapses in chamber, staff say he appears to be recovering
Sen. Patrick Brazeau is said to be recovering after collapsing on the Senate floor on Wednesday in the midst of debate on the federal government's major projects bill.
Brazeau, 50, rose to speak shortly after 4 p.m. before falling over sideways onto the floor.
A Senate spokesman says Brazeau appears to be recovering following an examination by paramedics.

Conservation officer reminds of angling regulations as summer fishing activity begins
The first long weekend of the summer is coming up for Canada Day and many anglers may have their sights set on the lake. Senior Conservation Officer for the Weyburn area Lindsey Leko reminds fishermen of some regulations to be aware of.
Leko begins with a licensing reminder, as everyone over the age of 16 must have a fishing license to be able to fish, with the exception of free fishing weekends. He says they are running into many people fishing without their license on hand.
'Food, fun & fireworks': Canada Day at Mainprize Regional Park starts this weekend
Canada Day celebrations always include a full weekend of fun at Mainprize Regional Park, which begins this weekend with a Slo-pitch tournament and a Cabaret.
"Saturday we are featuring a cabaret that we would love to see everybody come out for, from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. All ages are welcome with parents. Our feature band this year is Chris Henderson and the Band. The entry fee is $25 a person and children under 12 are free. We'd love to see you out there," said General Manager Michelle Walsh.
'It's always for the safety of the victim' WPS respond to no-contact order breaches
Two people in Weyburn breached a no contact order last week, however Deputy Chief Shane St. John with the Weyburn Police Service says they are two different circumstances.
Last Monday, the WPS received a report of a man contacting a woman in violation of a no contact condition. This is considered a breach of recognizance, and he was charged accordingly and released with a future court date.
